chances @ UCLA: 3.3 GPA for English major, w/ TAP

just wondering what my chances were? I have a 3.3 for English....alternate is Comparative Literature w/ TAP....

im panicking...please let me know what you guys think

I’d say you have a pretty good chance since you have tap but it will also depend upon your extra curriculars and personal statement.

I have a back-up major (comparative literature)…if I don’t get in for English, could I stand a chance for that one? I’m panicking right now and at this point i’d much rather get in for anything than not at all…

berkeleygirl is being very generous. honestly, ur a longshot for ucla. englsih is still an impacted major (10th one). if u got As on all prereqs, wrote great essays, and have some ECs that actually relate to english, then you might have a chance

Basically it comes down to how many C’s did you let seep into that 3.3 GPA? And in what classes?

just one F and one C.

F was because i could not finish the class but could not drop it anymore.

With TAP I’d say your chances are good. Especially if you explain why you got the F

Retake that F bud.

im def. retaking it

only problem is i already applied, and so they wont even see the grade for the class i am retaking anymore…

do they even really take into consideration those little box things?

They’ll probably notice that you are retaking it. I’d still retake it if I were you.

Should have just applied comp lit and transfered. I have a 3.44 with excellent leadership and work EC’s and I still applied as American lit major because I wanted the assurance I’d be admitted. I’ll switch majors when I get there.

Comp. Lit is my alternate…so would I still have a shot for that?

are there any pre-reqs for that major?

You’re lucky you have tap because without it you don’t get a second choice major. Yea you got a good shot with comp lit, the pre reqs are basically the same as English. It’s not like you have to have every pre-req. If they don’t offer it at your school or you didn’t take them all you can simply take classes related to the major which shows interest in the major. That’s what I was told by a UCLA adcom. If you show interest by taking similar classes it looks good.

I’m not an expert in your general area of study, but have become pretty good at estimating what places like UCLA and Cal are looking for in general (after talking with SO MANY different people -ad nauseum- counselors, admissions reps, transfer related websites, and last but not least this resourceful website).

Basically, they are looking at PATTERNS, not one particular incident! So don’t stress. Looks like your F is an ISOLATED incident, and after having calculated and recalculated my gpa scenarios for future courses a million times (I have made an excel worksheet just for this  ), I could make a very good guess that the F is severely damaging your gpa, and the C does not help either. Just take the good advice that appears in this thread (and ignore some of the idiotic responses that I have seen - not in this thread, but the other one where you posted about your “F” ). Retake that course as many above have stated, and EXPLAIN WELL what happened. Also tell them that you are confident you will do very well when you retake. In your explanation make sure to note that this is an isolated incident that was beyond your control (your transcript will show this, but you still need to point it out in a subtle way).

And yes…they definitely do take into consideration what’s written in those “box things”! That’s why you need to explain and point it out. Sometimes just looking at the transcript it may not strike them. They are human beings too, dealing with thousands of applications!
