Any advice or input would be great. I am looking for scholarships to help me through college so that I can use my college fund for a great graduate school. Thanks!!

Over the five year period from 1998 to 2002 (the most recent data available), the Department of Political Science at Florida State ranks 9th among American public universities, 17th among all US universities (public and private) and 24th in the world.

Thank you. Does anyone have any knowledge of scholarship opportunities at these schools? Do I have the statistics to get a good scholarship at any of my choices? Thanks!

emory has Emory Scholars. it's a full tuition/full ride scholarship if you get to the finalist round, and most (if not all) of the semifinalists get anywhere from 10k to 2/3 tuition per year. selection rate for semifinalists status is something like 15%

Ditto...you're solidly in at all those schools...if you really wanted to, you'd have a good shot at going ivy...they don't have merit scholarships at ivy league schools, but they do have GREAT financial aid.

Thank you for your kind comments. I had always assumed that I had no chance at Ivies, so I wasn't going to bother applying. I appreciate all your great comments!

On Friday FSU finally made it official - they are cutting 1000 spots in the freshmen class for 2008.

The target is 2000 freshmen for summer and 3300 for fall. Last year 6300 were admitted, this year is will only be 5300.

Numbers will be cut from the low academic (SAT/ACT/GPA) end of applicants still waiting on a decision and serious review will take place of accepted students' final hs grades.

500 spaces are also being cut from accepted transfers and only transfers with an AA degree will be accepted.

i'd be really surprised if you didn't get into those schools....

since your choices here are pretty much safe bets, why not read up on any programs or schools of the ivy league/sub-ivies? i don't have any doubt that you are capable of extending your possibilities and excelling.

i know scholarship is your concern here, but comparatively you seem to be in good enough financial standing to forget about most monetary concerns. plus, with your track record, you're bound to qualify for some great financial aid. try not to let finances become obstacles to your capabilities- student loans are something a smart person like you can easily overcome.

but i know, i know, scholarships are scholarships... we all want them. try sites like fastweb.com that alert you of available scholarship opportunities for your selected schools (and more!). most scholarships are essays, but hey a couple thousand bucks here and there is a pretty good incentive :P

I agree with EchoX - aim higher and see what you can get. I had about the same academic score you had back when I was in HS and schools like FSU and UF were afterthoughts.

I ended up transferring to UF under odd circumstances and I have plenty of friends at Emory and FSU. I think you should apply to Duke, Cal-Berk, UT-Austin, Duke, UVA, etc. I would consider taking loans if necessary.

While I did have classmates at UF who were 1550+ SAT type kids, I think it really depends on what you want to do. Most kids in my HS class planned on 'saving money for grad school' but really most of them did not end up going to grad school because many things change (and it's not a bad thing).

If you want to do investment banking, definitely check out UVA or UT-Austin.
If you are Pre-Med, then you may want to look another place, etc.

One girl in my class won that full scholarship that Emory offers (look into that). I doubt you'll be getting any need-based scholarships because there are going to be people with way less income and better credentials. That being said, Emory isn't a cheap school.

FSU - I remember they paid some of the early applicants from my class nicely. You are more likely to get cash here than from UF.

I'd like to revise this chances thread with the addition of some new information:

I have been selected to attend Girls State 2008.

My rank is lower than previously stated (10-15).

I am ranked #3 on the tennis team.

I am also adding some new colleges for consideration, bringing the total list to this:
- Florida State University
- University of Florida
- Wake Forest University
- Yale University
- Stanford University
- Duke University
- Vanderbilt University
