I am a rising senior, planning to major in applied mathematics.
As of recently I have become extremely worried about being admitted to a selective university. My freshman and sophomore years of high school were very good (4.3 weighted GPA) but the rigorous course load I took junior year along with many other factors led to a decline in my GPA (around a 3.5 weighted :( ) I ended up taking 3 APs this year and 2 honors classes, and I received a B in all of them and 1 C for the year.
I have a rigorous but manageable courseload for my senior year (4 AP's - but easier classes), and I plan to excel in them (hoping for straight A's) Can my senior grades help me?

Cumulative GPA: 3.9/5.0 (I don't know how to calculate the unweighted)
Class Rank: 22/163
SAT: 2160 - Reading 700 Math 720 Writing 740
EC's: Varsity Basketball 2 years, Varsity Football 3 years, FBLA, Student Government, National Honor Society, Honors Academy, Spanish Club
I volunteer at my local library as a Summer Bridge tutor.
I am a PA resident at a small distinguished public school. Do I have a chance at any of these schools? My dream school for a very long time was Penn - is it out of reach for me? Should I try applying ED?

All feedback is appreciated. Thank you

Also if you have any alternative schools to apply to that would be extremely helpful. I have Pitt and Penn State as some of my safeties

Bumpppppppppp… help me out pretty please

I am a rising senior as well, and Michigan and UNC were/are on my list… As an out of state student it is EXTREMELY difficult to get UNC (they take something like 10% of out of state students), so I ended up taking them off my list because my numbers, which are a little better than yours in terms of GPA, were probably not going to cut it. However, your SAT numbers look solid (I took the ACT, so I’m not too familiar with the SAT), and your extracurriculars are much better than mine, so UNC may be in the realm of possibility, but I would not get my hopes up.

In terms of Michigan, I plan on applying there and am optimistic about my chances. They accept a much higher percentage of out of state students but are still relatively selective. However, when I visited there, they said they would look for A’s in AP classes, so your B’s and C’s will probably not cut it for them.

I’m not particularly sure about UVA and NYU, but as long as you are talking about Central Michigan, you should be a lock. As for senior AP grades, colleges will likely look at your course-load and possibly look at your first semester grades but likely will not, so they will primarily look at your grades through your first three years of high school.

I hope this is helpful and wish you much good fortune in your college search

Umich is likely a reach for you due to low GPA.

@drewp24 thank you! I appreciate it. Yeah, Chapel Hill is really tough on OOS students. I’m hoping I have a shot at Michigan even if it is a reach. Good luck to you as well
