chances- USC, Georgia, Clemson (specifically USC!)

Ever since I found University of South Carolina in my college searching over a year ago, my heart was set on it. In every aspect of the school- it is just perfect for me. I'm from Rhode Island and for many reasons I want out of this state, and out of New England. The south seems a lot more for me. I visited University of Georgia, USC, and Clemson this summer and it seemed as if I'd be happy at all of them, but again, USC stood out to me as just tailored to everything I want and need in a school. Georgia was a close runner up, and Clemson was nice but there are many things about the school that I think would not be good for me (location in the middle of no where, the lack of diversity, etc.; and I do not like the purple and orange colors! lol) So anyway, I applied to those three schools as well as URI just as a safety. So far I've got accepted to URI and wait listed to Clemson. I will be finding out from USC around March 20th and I am just hoping and praying I get in. I think I'll be really upset if I don't. Many people are telling me I should, going by my credentials but I still have knots in my stomach thinking about it. I was wondering if I could get any opinions about my possible acceptance on here and if you have any expierences with USC?

I got an 1130 on my reading/math on my SAT. 580- CR and 550- Math
I am 35 in a class of 260 (about the top 15%)
I've taken 2 AP classes and mostly honors classes throughout high school.
I've played three varsity sports (tennis, basketball, softball)
I go to a public school
I'm a first generation college student (my father was in the military)
I have multiple volunteering experiences.
I've been secretary of the Letterman's Club the past two years
I was treasurer of the Executive Committee freshman year, and have been on the committee since.
I volunteered for the Rhode Island Republican Party
I made it to both the state History Day competitions and Science Fair.

2 things that worry me is that on the application when it asked me to list my activities/honors etc. I wrote that the activity sheet/resueme was being sent via ground mail. (I should have just typed them right into the application but I thought it would have looked better on the activity sheet)

Also, for the personal statement I sent my college essay about a lesson my father taught me (its a good essay, but I'm thinking I should have just done a standard personal statement)

Thanks for any feedback! Please be honest!

Couldn't agree more, I live in Maine and I want out of the snow. I'm a senior this year, I have a 3.3 gpa Unweighted and I got 730 on Math, 590 on CR, and 500 on Writing. I got into clemson, and my guess is that I won't get into georgia.

For You:
USC: Match
Clemson: Match
Georgia: Reach

thanks for the feedback. yea, the snows a killer. yea I'm figuring that if I got wait listed to Clemson I prob won't get into UGA but stranger things have happened so you never know.

I don't think Clemson is a match for you. No offense, but they've gotten like 5000 more applicants this year than ever before, and they've gotten very selective. I've got several friends who got rejected and they were all in the top 10% and had SATs between 1270-1350. And they were instate. You should've already found out from UGA. The sent out acceptances a week or 2 ago. I'd call them to ask about it. But Carolina's a nice school as well. My only problem with it(besides Steve Spurrier) are their dorms. You've got a pretty good chance to USC(it is not as selective as the other two). But Clemson and UGA are both low reaches.

Also, UGA is no more selective than Clemson. It has more prestige because of its age, but they both accept like 55% of students.

I have a D at Clemson, instate approx. top 10% of class get in. Hard to get into engineering & really, really hard to get into architecture. CU has few students from RI and north so that may help your chances. SAT are 1200ish. Hope that helps!

UGAs has gotten tough these latest 10 years or so. "Its not your grandfather's UGA" is a catch phrase used to explain why little Johnny, with 1100/1600 SAT's and a B average cannot get into the families traditional alma mater. (Big Johnny got in on an athletic grant in aid with 987 SAT's and a C+ average. LOL).

The Gamecocks rock!!! You are a good match there.
If you can't get in there, try Georgia Southern.
I hear South Alabama in Mobile is good and not too hard to get into. They have a medical school now.

It is WAY harder to get into CU than USC. Idk about UG. USC takes lower SAT's, both schools have a HUGE number of applicants because of the economy- it will be hard to get in this year.

Momasita is right though. USC is much less selective than UGA or Clemson. But if you like Columbia, its a nice college. I don't know BigG. Im sure little Johnny could get in with a c average and a 900 SAT if he got himself a football scholarship. cough Tim Tebow with his 880 SAT cough

I appreciate everyone's honesty! Yea, I can't believe some of the people that are getting rejected to Clemson- I'm surprised I even got on the wait list. I'm expecting not to get into UGA so that I won't be disappointed; and I totally understand that it is not easy to get in to; but who knows, anything can happen I guess! As long as I get in to USC I'll be happy- I do not want to go to URI! lol

A number of kids at our prep school in the deep south want to go somewhere there's snow. The grass is greener or the ground is whiter somewhere well away from home.LOL

For Clemson you should proceed under the assumption that you got rejected. With the number of applicants they receive, its highly unlikely that they'll have to use their waitlist. But then again Waitlists are weird, and number of applicants accepted from waitlists can literally range from 0-70%.

I say that as an out of state applicant, USC is a low reach. I know kids from my HS in Ga that got denied from UGA but accepted to USC w/ about 1200 SAT. So your chances are solid but you may want to mentally prepare yourself for the possibility of denial.

As for UGA can sometimes be more unpredictable than the Ivies. I know some preppy white kids that got in w/ a 1100 but another guy that got rejected w/ a 1260 and 3.7 GPA. So i really don't know. I'm pretty nervous that i wont get into UGA myself

(feel free to chance me)
