chances - UVA's top school

I really want to know how my chances are so far and what I should improve do this summer and the rest high school.
The colleges I want to go to are: UVA (maybe echols scholar), Johns Hopkins, VCU (honors program) - these are some pre-med colleges that I like the most around where I live.

Class Size: 366

Scores:
PSATs sophomore year: 192
Guess for PSAT next year (lowest I think I'll get to my goal): 205-220+

But anyway what do you think are my chances at those 3 schools mentioned above (please give me %s and/or words (reach/safety)).

What else should I do to stay on track for these colleges?

Dude, chill out. You're only a sophomore at the moment.

and those guess SAT's are a bad idea. I guessed my SAT to be 2200+ by senior year. Guess what I ended up with? 2010. And who knows..your GPA could change quite a bit.

Come back at the end of your junior year.

Wait... This is the end of my sophomore year.. If i come back end of junior year I only have a couple of months left for application... how would that advice help at all? For example if someone said go raise your SAT's i only would have like one chance.. If somoeone said do some EC's i would have that one summer and colleges would think im just padding my resume since im only doing that summer.. any real advice?

Since you're in state, you're in very good shape.

thanks man...

what do you think are my strengths and weaknesses (so i can work on them and try to display the strengths more)

BTW do you think im a for sure or border line....

Sorry for all the questions but UVA is my top school.. I probably would still go there if i got accepted to Johns Hopkins

Hey, your stats are looking really good! And it's really good that you

VCU Honors-Safety!
UVA-Good Match/definately will get you in but UVA is never a safety because it's highly selective!
John Hopkins-Low Match/Reach(John Hopkins is always a reach though)

What I suggest is getting more of a focus in your extracurriculars, they are very good but colleges do like to see dedication and focus. You have a leg up since you already know that you want to go pre-med, so focus your activities on that. Volunteering at the hospital is great, maybe try to get a job there part time. Maybe become regisitered in first aid/CPR, volunteer at blood drives, anything you can!

For UVA you are in-state and honestly your stats are a good match. I do not know too much about John Hopkins but definately keep the marks high and the Math and Science areas. PSAT's are a good indicator but that all changes on test day. I did better on the SAT than the PSAT. Just take the SAT early so that when you get a good score you don't have to worry about cramming your senior year :D. Good luck, and you'll be FINE!

thank you very very much... i know how good chances I have...

But yeah im going to do lots this summer... not for college necessarily but just because I want to

Ill be volunteering at library and hospital. Maybe working at Sonics. RUNNING ALOT (for xc), Doing governor school things, etc.

as an OOS UVA student myself (if that puts you at ease at all) you seem to be in good shape. As someone already noted, be sure to become more focused on a particular EC that you take pride in. Its quality, not quantity that counts. As for advice for that final push, bust your ass for your SAT's, take hard courses and do well. Dont slack off...UVA really looks at both your junior and senior years (more than some may think). Write some draft essays for their application this year, start getting used to it. The essay is a really important part of the application at UVA. Good luck!

BTW, i am also pre-med. If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask.

Thanks man.. what does OOS mean?
Yeah the working ass off for SAT's (bought two books and am going to start this whole summer prepping) and taking hard courses (governor's school and two other AP's plus Pre-AP spanish) is not a problem hopefully. The only thing is that I got 2 B's my freshman year because of the hardest teachers ever and me not caring that much for college yet... and that screws my GPA. This year I got all A's (in harder classes) and hopefully keep that up junior and senior year (im prepping for those classes this summer with books). So yeah my rank right now is like 35th or something in a class of 366 so thats my only worry. If i do get all A's in junior and senior year it will be atleast top 5 i think.

So my question is... is UVA one of those schools who disregards freshman grades in their admission? also... are they one of those schools who place high value on improvement through years, because that would look really good for me. Thanks for the help everyone

oos means out of state. not only are you super-focused but you are doing very well. at the moment you are on track. 2 Bs wont screw you over at all. I had plenty of Bs and did just fine (see stats profile if you want).

thanks man... UVA should make a stats profile thread too... (besides the transfers thread)

i wouldnt say they disregard them at all. They probably dont hold them to as high of a standard as the other years though. Dont quote me on that...it just seems to make more sense.

ok thanks... another question: Is UVA one of the schools that counts your highest score on each individual section of the SATs? or does it count the total score more?

They look at your highest scores on the sections, regardless of whether or not they were taken at the same test sitting.

Not sure I answered your question.....dont know if sections are "more imprtant" individually than the total...I have been told that less weight this year was given to the writing exam.

wat i was asking was like... I heard in other threads that colleges add up your highest individual sections.. For example lets say I got in Octobor 690 CR, 760 M, and 730 W. In May i got 730 CR, 790 M, and 650 in W.

So my totals in October is: 2180 and May is: 2170
But the college would accept: 730 CR, 790 M, 730 W to get a : 2250

So is that what UVA does?

It is my understanding from current students that UVa, like most colleges would give you the 730 CR, 790M, and 730 W. for 2250. Good for you! Do you mind if I ask how did you brought them up?

i didn't.. i haven't taken the SAT's at all yet lol just hypothetical
