These are the colleges that I am definitely thinking of applying to (ranked from highest to lowest):

Stanford
MIT
Princeton
Columbia
Princeton
Yale
University of Chicago
Brown
Harvard
Cal Tech
Johns Hopkins
University of Pennsylvania
Cornell
Dartmouth
Rice

Safeties (???)
University of Southern California
UT
U Michigan -- Ann Arbor
Wash U. at St. Louis
Carnegie Mellon
Duke
Northwestern

I really need help narrowing my safety schools and determining realistic chances. My top choices at this moment are Stanford, Princeton, Columbia and MIT. I am thinking of applying to Princeton early but I think I may have a better chance of getting in early to Columbia SEAS which is restrictive. Stanford has always been my dream but there is no real advantage of applying early. My dad is an alum if that helps, and most of the smartest kids at my school are applying to Stanford early, so I am hesitant about choosing Stanford.

I have a feeling I know which high school you attend…nevertheless, to the point…your record reveals you will be a very competitive applicant depending on your ESSAYS and RECOMMENDATIONS (both of which are crucial)…

…if you have definite legacy to Stanford, you should apply REA to Stanford to show your interest in the early round…legacy status for most TOP schools “usually” benefit the candidate in the early round with minimal to no “benefit” in the regular round. Despite what the talking heads in college admissions say…TOP colleges like to weigh and measure “YIELD” in the early round to admit those who most likely will “come” if given the “golden ticket”…and those with “ties” to the university are more likely to come. I would have said the same if your parent was a Princeton legacy…to apply to Princeton SCEA.

I would definitely not apply to Columbia ED since it is “BINDING” and you will lose all chances of acceptance for other schools in the regular round…

…I would save all the other schools for regular round…that is, if you don’t get into Stanford in REA…if you get in then you could just enjoy the rest of senior year…

…work on your ESSAYS now…they can make or break you. Good luck.

What’s here are the ones for which you are not a reach:
