Hey, so like everyone else, can I get an honest opinion on which schools I'd have a chance with? I'm probably applying as an engineering (haven't decided which discipline) or applied math major. O yeahh... I'm an Asian girl if that means anything.

Schools I'm applying to (all regular decision)
Columbia (DREAM SCHOOL! ishhh?)
USC
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD
UC Davis
University of Chicago
Northwestern
Stanford (super reach)
NYU
Brown University
Cornell University
Emory University
Johns Hopkins University

Yeah, being an Asian girl from the Bay Area puts you at a huge disadvantage simply because there are too many of you I’d say you have a shot at all but Columbia and Stanford. While Cornell and Brown are ivies and therefore reaches, your academics aren’t lacking compared to their 2010 statistics. The only thing I’d worry about is your ECs because you have a lot of single year ECs, which doesn’t show much devotion on your part. I would say you have good ECs - enough so that adcoms won’t think you’re only booksmart - but they definitely don’t give you an upperhand.

Therefore, coming from a chance noob (me): [I’m only doing schools I’m somewhat familiar with]

Columbia: high reach
Stanford: high reach
USC: Unfamiliar [UF]
UCBerkely: match/high match
UCLA: match/high match
UCSD: UF
UCDavis: UF
UChicago: reach/high reach
Northwestern: reach
NYU: safety/match
Brown: reach
Cornell: reach
Emory: high match/reach
Johns Hopkins: high match

For most of those you’re going to be a shoe-in (NYU, Cornell, Emory, UC’s).
Columbia and a few of those other top notch ones will definitely be totally up to luck. They can be very random at times. But I’d say 50/50 assuming you have a more extensive resume and/or EC’s.

I think that everything besides EC’s match up. Test scores are in the middle 50%(higher for some schools on your list), and grades are obviously awesome. But leadership, community service, and awards are lacking. Any school based awards you can apply for?
