Will the 3 hurt my chances at admission?

hey, thanks for the response. first things first: you.

do you have a rank? weighted GPAs are so different from school to school. regardless, it really depends on your transcript. some people get screwed over by a teacher or two, which serves as the proverbial big-huge-wave to their proverbial fishing boat. if it's really just an anomaly, then i think most colleges will overlook it due to your strong standardized scores. You go to livingston, which is very good for you: very very competitive, and you're not asian OR white (sorry for the racism, but you can't deny its role in college admissions these days). And colleges don't see AP scores unless you choose to reveal them until after you're accepted.

All-in-all, taking affirmative action into consideration, i'd say:

Columbia SEAS: Match
Cornell Engineering: Match
Duke Pratt: Match
MIT (EA): Low Match
Princeton: Low Reach
Rutgers (my state school): Safety, full easily
Stanford: Match
UC berkeley: Low Match
University of Michigan: Safety, definitely some scholarships
UPenn-SEAS: High Match

And about your response:
I didn't like the atmosphere at UPenn and JHU (both in shady parts of big cities, especially the section of baltimore JHU is in. i didn't feel safe at all). I'm considering MIT, and it's good to know someone else agrees! =]

Good luck with everything =]

very good stats, but do try to keep the gpa up. i would definitely try to take a class or something related to your major, to strengthen that interest on your application. i hope the research works out, that sounds great!

Most of the schools you're applying to are extremely competitive (except Rutgers and UMich), but you have a 2370 SAT and URM status, so your chances are very strong everywhere.

Your stats are great for your ethnicity or URM status. However, don't completely bank on that. Even on here, there have been some pretty bizarre cases of acceptances are rejections. For example, you'll on the UPenn ED thread for 2007, a double legacy with a perfect GPA, great ECs, supposedly great essays and recs, and outstanding test scores much similar to yours got rejected. And, we were all wondering if he had committed a felony. Nope, nothing. A plain rejection that you could never make any sense out of.

On paper you look good, but you have to go beyond that. So, while your URM status may help, don't leave that GPA uncovered. Get the best recs you can. Write the best essays you can. And, if you do that, then you'll have a shot anywhere. From what little I know, I think you could get into Columbia SEAS now.

basically the fact that you're one of the most sought URM and with your pretty damn good scores, i'd say you're in most of those pretty much. your grades could hurt you though. i dunno.

very good chances with good test scores; there is not much that you can do to improve your chances, but you could try to get more of a leadership role in your ec's

u have a great chance with great test scores. Only weakness is gpa and somewhat ec's. All the ivies are a lottery to get into, but u have a good of a chance as anybody.

Colleges don't care about your AP scores Fred.

You have a decent shot at all those schools. First, you're African American with a 2370...that's a real shiner for admission officers. Your GPA is a bit low; that may hurt you. 3.7 should be the minimum GPA for regular acceptances, but you have special URM status so it may not affect you as much. Your extracurriculars are decent (I don't know how much involvement you've had from what you've listed so I won't judge) though not amazing. But still, URM status, strong application, great chances.

Here's what I think will happen (though you shouldn't trust me, as I am no admission officer):

Columbia SEAS - Accept
Cornell Engineering - Accept
Duke Pratt - Accept
MIT (EA) - Waitlist, Reject (academics are very important at MIT)
Princeton - Accept
Rutgers (my state school) - Accept
Stanford - Accept
UC Berkeley - Waitlist, Reject (state schools judge a lot by numbers and cannot have racial preference)
University of Michigan - Accept
UPenn SEAS - Accept

Will you please help me out by chancing me at Stanford btw? I'd like that a lot...Thanks!

I don't mean to be judging based on race in anyway. Nevertheless, with a 2370 on the SAT's and because you are a minority (African American), I can almost guarantee you will be accepted into any college of your choice. My Friend is hispanic and he has a 3.8 W GPA with a 2020 on SAT's and he just got accepted into Princeton and Harvard. You have no need to worry.

please get in everywhere. if u don't, i don't have a chance

my predictions:

Columbia SEAS: accept
Cornell Engineering: accept
Duke Pratt: accept
MIT (EA): accept
Princeton: waitlist
Rutgers (my state school): accept
Stanford: waitlist/accept
UC berkeley: waitlist/accept
University of Michigan: accept
UPenn-SEAS: accept

"Will the 3 hurt my chances at admission?"

No, not in a non-native language.

a 3 won't hurt at all if you don't send in scores...?

Bump 10 char

76 replies already---do you really want evaluations or just praises for your overly inflated ego?

In the OPs defense, I must say that most of the posts weren't focused on his chances.

well seeing as you are a junior, you have plenty of time to work on your app, but to me it seems you are on track for a great shot at any school
1.)you are african american and you have a 2370, that alone has its benefits twofold
2.) if your research does well (intel/isef/siemens), you will be set to go ANYWHERE, seriously that is what i am banking on

anyway for your schools-
Columbia SEAS- same as UPenn(below)
Cornell Engineering- high match/low reach
Duke Pratt- high match/low reach
MIT (EA)- reach (HYPSM is basically a toss up, always a reach for all)
Princeton- reach
Rutgers (my state school)- safety
Stanford- reach
UC berkeley- reach (OOS)
University of Michigan- safety
UPenn-SEAS- im not too familiar with upenn but from what i see i would guess better chance than HYPSM, but still somewhat reach

i think ur test scores are quite impressive...GPA is still very good (top 10% is not bad and is acceptable by those colleges u listed...) given that u are african american...u hv a nice affirmative action going for you...honestly i think u hv a good chance (40-50%) for all those schools....do u know Justin Pak? he went to gov school with me this summer...i believe he goes to same school as u haha
