Chances with ROTC Scholarship

My son very much wants to attend A&M and join the Corps of Cadets. He has been to 2 Spend the Nights with the Corps and 1 Spend the Day with the Corps. He had his Army ROTC Scholarship interview with the A&M Professor of Military Science and we learned a couple of weeks ago that he was indeed awarded a 4 Year Scholarship that he can use at Texas A&M. He got 1200 on his SAT. His school doesn't rank its students, but it is a very challenging college prepatory school. His GPA is in the low 3's. Does award of the scholarship add to his chances of getting in?

Although an admissions counselor would probably not admit it, I'd say his strong interest in the Corps and getting an ROTC scholarship would give him a great chance. The participation in these programs would show this interest to an admissions counselor.

I want to join the Corps myself and am applying for an AFROTC scholarship. I've been to the Aggie Eagle Program and Spend the Day with the Corps program.

If you have any more questions you would like me to answer. I'll try my best to answer them.

I have a "ROTC Scholarship Opportunities at Texas A&M University" document that gives a lot of information about each ROTC scholarship. One question it answers is: "Will awarding of ROTC scholarship guarantee admission to TAMU?"

The answer is: "Possibly- At a minimum, you must meet TAMU enrollment eligibility requirements. Contact the Office of Commandant, Asst. Cmdt. For Admissions Support, for specific requirements and responsibilities."

Sounds like your son is pretty much in!

I have a question you may be able to answer since your son already got a scholarship: What if you get a scholarship in an engineering major and you can only take General Studies freshman year? Can you still accept the scholarship?

I'm confident about my admissions, but a little bit nervous about getting directly into one of the hardest colleges.

Thanks,

Zach

That is very good to know about the scholarship making it a probable guarantee of acceptance into A&M!

As far as your question about your major, I copied the following from the Air Force ROTC scholarship site:

"For example, you are offered an electrical engineering scholarship. To use your scholarship, you must be admitted as an electrical engineering major at a college or university with an Air Force ROTC program and the school’s electrical engineering program must be Air Force approved."

I really think that considering you have been offered an AFROTC scholarship and want to be a part of the Corps of Cadets, and with the good grades and SAT math score, you will stand a better than average chance of getting into the College of Engineering. Hopefully, you have already applied and alerted A&M to your scholarship award. It really sounds like the "early bird gets the worm" there if you are truly serious about wanting to become a part of the Corps.

My son got his acceptance to A&M today! The online AIS site said his admission decision had been mailed and on Step 5 it stated that he had been admitted and gave him a check box to officially accept the decision. Needless to say, we are all thrilled. He was not an automatic admit, so obviously the ROTC scholarship was a crucial factor in his acceptance. We appreciate all the support and info on this discussion board that helped us relieve some of the anxiety of waiting. I wish everyone on here who hopes to get into A&M an equally satisfying outcome. Gig 'em!

Awesome gxgal7! I'm not suprised. I knew he'd make it. What major did he get?

It didn't specify online. Perhaps it will in the mailed version we will receive in a few days. His first choice is History and his second choice is General Studies. He was approved for majoring as what the Army calls "generalist" which is basically most non-technical majors. Unlike the AFROTC and NROTC scholarships, the AROTC scholarship is not so specifically tied to what your major is going to be.

I found out that I got everything in Nov 12. Hopefully, I'll hear back in a month or two.

Zach, I'm assuming you are talking about for your NROTC scholarship. Let us know when you hear if you got it, and if you do, immediately call the Corps Center so you can fax them a copy.

gxgal7, sorry I didn't clarify, I was talking about all of my admissions stuff for TAMU. I need to do that darn PT test for ROTC scholarships still.
