I'm going to try to volunteer at the Town Office next year and I'm applying to be a student member of the schoolboard.

So, I go to a small public highschool in Maine and there aren't many titled leadership positions. I tried to start a debate team at my school but no teachers were interested in being advisors...I might try again next year. I'm interested in government and international relations but I'm not sure if that's clear with my EC's. Also, well...the SATs are low. I'm planning on retaking them but I'm not sure how much they'll go up. Any suggestions/ideas/comments? Do I have a chance? What other schools should I considera applying to? Thanks!

Well, I'm gonna be honest, you NEED to get the SAT up. You really shouldn't have anything in the 500s to try and get into Georgetown. You aren't a minority, and your ECs are average. Georgetown is definitely gonna be a reach. I'd apply George Washington (D.C.), American, Tufts, Johns Hopkins, a few more safety/match schools. Maybe NYU. You should get into American and probably George Washington, but the all the others will be reaches. If you get the score up, even just up to a 2000 would greatly increase your chances. I'd shoot for a 700/600/700. However, you could probaly do even better on CR. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Does Johns Hopkins really have a good IR/political science program?

Any other comments?

take the ACT in September

Damn people! Maybe she's just a poor test taker. I know I am! Old SAT 630 M, 640 V, I got a 620 on the new Writing section. But I just found out that I got a B+ in Calculus and an A- in English (Both college level (Syracuse)) classes). What I'm saying is that my grades in school and my test scores don't exactly correlate. If you're doing B+/A-/As in all your classes and you're doing well in all your APs, totally go for it.

P.S. Georgetown doesn't even look at your SAT writing scores because they know you can't possibly write an essay to the best of your abilities in x amount of time.

heh, Johns Hopkins/Georgetown/Tufts are probably tied for best IR schools in the country.

definitely try the act test

Give the Act a shot, you could really use getting those scores up. JHop does have a good IR program, but its not going to be any easier to get into than GTown. A point you might want to know, its National Honor Society, not "Honors," its something small but make sure you put it correctly on your resume.

Thanks for the spelling correction. I didn't realize JHU had such a good program...I guess I haven't done my research. Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely take the test again, just hoping I miraculously get 100 points more on each section.

Not all hope is lost. I know a guy that got an 1120 on the sats but i guess he got in for some other reason. Admissions is a strange thing. I would suggest applying to some easier schools too though.

CNYHoya,
Gtown doesn't currently look at SAT writing scores because there isn't enough data from previous classes, NOT because they think it's too difficult. Georgetown will consider the writing section as soon as they can reliably use the scores to compare students.

the writing section of the current SAT is very similar to the former SAT II Writing test which was considered, if not required, prior to 2006.

I took the SATs twice with no prep and did poorly (1870, 1950) back in Dec. & Jan. Now I'm looking to take the ACT and do much better (33-ish range, if my practice tests so far have been accurate). Since I need to submit 3 SATIIs to Georgetown, by bad SAT scores will be available for them to see. Will this look bad, even if my ACT is better and my SATII scores are good?
