I actually just made a post about admission to SLO. I've been wanting to go to Cal Poly myself and after nearly a year of browsing the CP forum on CC this is what I have been hearing:
-Cal Poly looks at numbers rather than ECs/CS. Though ECs or work experience in the area of your prospected major will more strongly considered.
-A few people even say ECs/CS aren't even looked at!
-Arch., EE, and BME ... especially Architecture are harder to get in than others
-Rigor of classes are considered
-Writing portion on SAT not looked at; writing on ACT "optional"
-SAT II will not be looked at, but you can get college credit for good scores
-Letters of Recs will not be looked at (same goes with UCs!!)
-They are quite forgiving of low GPA and higher test scores
-Many people have, much to their surprise, made it into engineering/sciences with below-accepted applicant average GPA and scores
The stats for Engineering FALL 2006 (Applied/Enrolled)
GPA 3.81/3.71
SAT 1280/1167
ACT 27/25

I think you have a very decent chance here

UCs, on the other hand seem to highly regard ECs, and because of this I you think you'll have an even better chance at Davis, Irvine, SB and the others "below" them. There is one more SAT (and one more ACT) so you do have a chance to change both your tests. good luck

UC Berkeley/UCLA--Reach
UCSD--Slight Reach to Reach
UCI/UCSB/UCD--Match to Slight Reach
UCSC--Match
UCR--Safe Match
UCM--Safety
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo--Match to Slight Reach

urkulmum:

UCB/UCLA: Super Reach
UCSD: Reach
UCI/UCD/UCSB: Slight Reach
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Match

What does that mean? Super Reach to Reach? That's like saying The ocean is blue but the sky is even more blue.

no..it means that his chances are slim
