Chances?
GPA: 3.602- if you use the scale on college board. It's a 3.375 if you go by my school's scale. However, that is taking into account a slightly rough start. I was not a very good student in ninth and tenth grade- I simply wasn't mature enough. But I've grown a whole lot and my grades have gotten much better and I go to a really good school. We are recipients of the governors award and number 2 Piedia school in the nation. We also have a 99% graduation rate and 96% of students go to college.

AP's: none- my school doesn't offer them.
Honors: all core classes from Sophomore year on (save for Spanish and Math which didn't go honers until junior year) are honers. That is English 10, American History, Spanish III, Us History, Chemistry, Physics, Pre-Cal, Statistics, Economics, Governance, English 11, English 12, and Conversational Spanish IV

my essay is, according to everyone who read it, awesome and I know that my recommendations will be really, really good.

Take a look at the Common Data Set for Grinnell. You can see how your scores fit the distribution. I can’t tell from your grades if your school would say you are in the top 25% of your class or not (90% of Grinnell admits are, and most are in the top 10%). On the other hand, an upward trend in GPA is important (many schools discount 9th grade).

If you are a guy, that will help (the ratio is 47%/53% male to female- a typical LAC trend). And TN may be a less well represented state among applicants (I don’t know-just a guess). Certainly a farm background is unusual and good recs and essays can help a lot.

I would strongly certainly encourage you to apply, but you’ll still need some safeties. What are you planning to study and/or hoping to do with your degree?

Just so you know most Tennesseans don’t grow up on farms. I live in a city and have never milked a cow or harvested a crop in my life (unless you count picking basil from my mom’s herb garden) and my school doesn’t rank. They won’t even tell me where I rank but I’m probably in the top quartile but not the top tenth but most of those people get higher grades because they don’t so as much extracurriculars as i do. And I’m thinking of doubling in Psychology and Creative Writing, maybe I’ll pick up sociology as a minor because they allow up to three majors.

Sorry, for some reason I thought I’d read that you’d grown up on a farm. Must have been thinking of some other CC-er whose post I recently replied to.

I agree with M’s Mom. It is not a safety for you, but you have a shot at it. Find out all you can about the school and visit if you can (hopefully when classes are in session and you can meet students) so you can find out if it fits you and you can articulate the mutual fit.
