chances?

my stats:

to start off my school is probably the best private school on the West coast, and just to help you determine this no one in our grade has a 4.0 even though we have pretty much the smartest kids from the state (we have by far the highest number of national merit scholars than any other school in state).

We don't technically get a gpa or rank, but they give us our quartile and a gpa at the end of junior year which doesn't get published. but....

gpa: around a 3.5/6 (we don't have honors in anything except math/science, which are not really my strongest subjects)

sats: old: m:700 v:730 new (i also retook it yesterday so hopefully these will go up): m:720 cr: 690 w: 670 (i did really well on the mc but realllly badly on the essay which i know i will improve a lot on the one i just took)

APs: my school doesn't offer AP classes but you can take any of the tests that you want; US history:4 English Lang:4

as for the difficulty of my classes, i have taken science, math, history and english and art all four years, and except for my lack of honors in math/science at the highest levels.

my ec's aren't great but i think that they at least show my interests; last year i had an internship with the Kerry campaign that i dedicated a huge amount of time to, and i am having my boss there write me a rec, this summer i had an internship with a senator's reelection campaign that i plan to
continue. I also spent a month in china doing community service w/ my school which will connect to stuff i am working on this year in school. i am also a peer tutor in chinese, english and chemistry.

If you can't tell from that stuff (i have other things too but they are more random and not necessarily related to my interests), i want to study international politics in college.

my list is very ambitious but my school has a really good college counselor (who knows my political involvement well) and yeah despite my sort of low gpa it's actually not that bad for my school: EA: Georgetown (sfs) and U Chicago, RD: Yale, Brown, Penn (i'm a legacy), Johns Hopkins and some others but they are more like safeties.

Also, does it really matter if you are a nm commended student?

Sorry i know this is long but i didn't think that the boring list of stats really suited my experiences :P

thanks if you can tell me any of my chances at these places that would be awesome.

sorry forgot post my sat IIs:

US Hist: 720
Math IIC: 750
Chem: 700

I just don't see an ivy, maybe Penn if the parent that made you a legacy has been generous. With both below average SATs and GPA and average ECs, plus 4s on Aps, it's a long shot.

bump.......................

Chances threads are in another forum (one I don't read). Your GC will be the best gague of your chances, esp since you go to a private school where GC's are well qualified.

Humm, dd's west coast private school only had 4 boys ever get 4.0 all 4 years, since the 1920's, so this is not ususual at private schools. They will know the profile of your school and take that into consideration how tough/not the grading is.

I think you are in-line for all schools you are applying to. Those schools are all mostly long shots for everyone, however. And Penn will give you legacy points regardless of your family being generous or not. I have heard that doing ED at Penn for legacies helps more that at other places and hurts more for RD but this is just anecdotal.

Now don't be a weenie and keep bumping. No one knows chances. If your GC is letting you apply to the school, you have some sort of shot. They are not going to let you waste everyone's time otherwise.
