joshb- As an OOS student, UNC is a reach. Keep in mind that UNC OOS is harder to get into than Duke- it's extremely competitive. It's hard to predict your chances (borderline applicant), but really strong essays would work in your favor.

q's mom- 3rd decile is not very imformative. Is the school extremely competitive/prestigious? That makes a difference. He's hispanic, which is a tremendous boost at UNC (~5% of entering class is hispanic), so an excellent SAT score (and essays) could help his chances considerably. A mediocre SAT (below 2100, probably) would make UNC a big reach.

K, just for fun I'll put my stats in here and see what you all think (Yes, I am applying to UNC and Duke - I've heard Duke is easier for OOS?):

ACT: 31 sophomore year, 34 junior year
SAT: 1410/2090, 1400/2190?
3.84 UW GPA
class rank 34/565, very competative school (9 national merit semifinalists, no weighted GPA for ranking)
by the time I graduate I'll have 10 AP classes

Drum major 9th grade, 11th grade
Yearbook editor-in-chief 11th grade, 12th grade
Varsity track 10, 11, probably spring of 12
American Legion Award in 9th grade

National Honor Society (11th grade)
National Merit Semi-Finalist as of Oct. 22 (listed USNA as my first choice school)
Won national essay contest
Girls State participant

I think strong essays might get you into Duke, but I'm not so sure about UNC. Your numbers are fine, but UNC gets a lot of OOS applicants, so it's hard to tell. Good luck!

UNC may accept a smaller percentage of OOS kids than Duke, but by no stretch of the imagination is it harder to get into. You've got a lot of kids who go "well UNC is public I could probably get in there" who are good not great students, and don't have a clue about how hard it is to get into UNC. Kids applying to Duke know they're applying to arguably one of the top five schools in the country. I think you would be hard pressed to find a kid who got into Duke and not UNC from anywhere.

I'm not saying that UNC isn't very competitive out of state, I know it is, but putting it on the same level as Duke is just incorrect

Im out of state, so i know my chances are very limited but here is what i got:

3rd in class out of 306 (in top 0.9%) with a 100.00% GPA

Currently taking 4 AP classes senior year

SAT: Math = 670 Verbal = 640 CW= 590 (ouch i know) with a 9 essay

Work at least 15 hrs/ week
Captain of varsity swim team
Key Club and special olympics
Secretary of french club
Tennis team
sunday school teacher every sunday
National Honor Soceity member

do you think im likely to be accepted copmared to what you know about out of state students at UNC?

By no stretch of imagination can u say duke admission is even comparable to UNC Oos admission. I have THREE friends who got into duke but didn't get into UNC Oos (2 from NJ and 1 from NY). One got waitlisted/ rejected and others just got rejected. One of them got into Georgetown, Michigan, Duke and got rejected from UNC. The other got into Hopkins, Vandy, Duke and didn't gain acceptance to UNC. To people who know both schools, they are on parr with each other. One is better than another in different field of studies. I guess Duke may fare little better because it's a private school but the comparison between two schools would be analgous to UCLA/ Stanford or Michigan/ Northwestern (State vs Private). But there is nobody that claims that these institutions don't match up as academic parrs to each other. They are in relatively equivalent league.

Would strong essays help in the admission process? I have a 3.5 gpa, 1870 sat (600v/640m/630cw). I participate in xc, track, speech, student council, and other activities. I know my grades and SAT scores aren't great, but I'm sort of hoping that my essays would also play a major part in admissions. I'm OOS international so I know my chances are limited... I really want to go to UNC-Chapel Hill, but should I stop anticipating and start preparing for a rejection?
