Definitely in - with your stats you qualify for an automatic $7,000/yr merit scholarship. You might consider retaking the ACT - if you raise it to a composite 30, the automatic merit increases to $10,000/yr.

I find out from Miami Feb 1st. I have a 3.75/5 and a 27 on my ACT. My classes are average, no honors or anything like that. I was involved with some work during the summers, 4 years of soccer, 4 years of guitar, 2 years of water polo and one year of wrestling. I also have a good amount of volunteer work under my belt. Also, I said on my application I was interested in Business even though I can’t get in, does that decrease my chances? I live in the North Shore where Miami loves to accept students in that location. I’m just curious on my chances of getting in are.

By North Shore, I am assuming of Chicago - New Trier, Lake Forest etc. We are from Arlington Heights (Prospect) - my S says there are about 60 North Shore kids in this year’s freshman class. Miami loves the Chicago suburbs, especially the North Shore and is attempting to raise its profile even more with billboard advertisements.

As far as your stats, you are kinda on the border. I would make sure you have shown an expressed interest - campus visit. If your 7th semester grades show any improvement, call admissions and send a transcript to boost your chances.

If I get deferred I won’t mind because I can have someone write me rec whose on the board, but I personally want to get in myself as of now for a personal benefit. On the border do you mean denied or accepted, or deferred. I’ve also visited before and sometimes send an email once in a while to the admission counselor to show her im very interested.

Your ACT is right about at the 50% mark for the class of 2010. The problem is your GPA and lack of honors/AP. The North Shore schools are known for their academic rigor and reputation, so the Ad Con will be able to compare your course load to other applicants from your school. You didn’t give your class rank - I would compare it against the class profile on the Miami website.

What has your school/college counselor said? He/she would know probably have a good idea where Miami’s “cutoff” for your school is - or you could get a good idea if you have Naviance.

With the caveat that I have no idea how your essay and ECs stacks up, I don’t think you are any worse than deferred. The ultimate answer will depend upon the number of applications Miami receives and their quality. The question is when to play your Ace (the board member recommendation).

hmmm idk is miami harder to get into oos because if you were instate youd be in for sure. i got in with 3.4w and a 28…miami isnt all that competitive…accepts 80%

I am sure there are plenty of kids with an ACT and GPA like MichaelDS who get in. My biggest concern is that he indicated that he took a less than aggressive work load at one of the country’s top high schools that has resources and opportunities most schools can only dream about. I saw in linked article somewhere on CC that Miami also had a good sized increase in applications this year - so competition may be greater.

Miami loves these North Shore kids because they are very good, well rounded and educated students who most likely fell just a little shy of getting into an ivy/ultra elite college. And since this is one of the wealthiest areas in the Midwest, many of the parents can pay the full OOS tab out of their WAM (Walkin Around Money). The zip code is likely a positive for MichaelDS since who doesn’t want a full-pay OOS student?
