I am currently a high school junior. I have a 3.42 unweighted GPA and a 3.97 weighted GPA. I know these are a little on the low side. I got straight A's last semester, so hopefully I will get straight A's again this semester and can up my GPA to about a 3.7 unweighted and 4.2 weighted.

I'm in the top 20% at a highly competitive school.

31 on ACT

I've taken all honors/ AP classes throughout high school. So far I've taken AP Human Geography and AP World History, and am currently taking AP US History and AP English Language and Comp. Next year I'm taking AP Calc AB, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science and ENG 206 & 207 at the local community college. I will have also taken journalism all 4 years.

I'm on the editorial board of my school newspaper (I plan on being editor-in-chief next year), I do both regular and ACT tutoring, and am a member of the Gay-Straight Alliance.

I'm looking to be a journalism major, if that is factored into admission.

Thanks!

You have solid stats and suggested dedication to your journalism program. Medill is a rigorous school and does ask a lot of you with regards to effort; if you’re able to, you should visit and do a Medill undergrad tour.

Otherwise, you have a decent shot. Applying wouldn’t be a bad idea.

A 3.42 is definitely on the low side, and a 31 ACT is okay, but still underwhelming. If you think another shot at it might yield a 32, I would try it. It’s good that you’ve taken or will take lots of APs, but AP Psych and EnviroSci are among the “softer” APs.
Obviously, being EIC of the paper would be great.
All that said, if you want to major in journalism, there really isn’t an undergrad degree more worth having than one from Medill, so you should unquestionably take a shot. You don’t know if you don’t try, and you just might get in.
Good luck.

I’m gonna go with unlikely.

Nothing stands out and GPA is low, I think it’s probably unlikely. There are a lot of EIC’s at a lot of high schools around the country so its good, but not going to make you stand out. I’m not sure all A’s would bring your GPA up .3, if it would good job!
Good luck

Even with 3.7 you are expecting to get after this semester, I believe your stats seem to be on the low end side. Try to retake the ACT and bring a point or two. That would help some out…

Yeah I know I’m on the low side. I’m taking the ACT again in April and hopefully I can bump it up to a 32 or even a 33. I got a 35 on the English portion, so that might help me with Medill. I’m applying to Medill’s summer program most likely. It’s a lot of money, but I know it will be worth it if I get in. I also plan on applying early admission, writing the world’s best essay, and getting some awesome letters of rec!

With respect to the other responders, I definitely applied and was accepted with a 3.4 GPA and fewer extracurriculars. If you manage to be a Cherub, that’ll work in your favor too.

Apparently my GPA is secretly a 3.5, which should help a little bit. Thank you everyone for your input!
