Hey guys, i'm going to be applying to colleges next year, and UCI and Chapman are my top 2 schools. I was just wondering if you guys could chance me. (Want to major in English btw)

-Weighted GPA: 3.53
-Unweighted GPA: 3.38
-SAT: 1800 (Hopefully 2000)
-SAT II: going to be taking Korean, Literature, and maybe US History (probably get at least 750 on Korean)
-EC's: Make A Wish
Red Cross
Volunteering at the library
75+ community service hours
Had the opportunity to intern last summer, and was able to give a speech in front of the US Capitol, rally in front of the White House, spoke at the National Press Club, and had the opportunity to meet/speak with many congressmen/women. (Hopefully this will help)
-Number of AP's by senior year: 6

UCI is my number one school, and Chapman is second. What do you guys think!? And i'm hoping by taking SAT subject tests, i'll have an advantage since it isn't mandatory to take them for UC's anymore.

Wow, subject tests won’t be required anymore? Lucky.

I think you have okay chances. Is that your UC GPA though? If your UC GPA is higher, then maybe that’ll be better. I think UCs care more about GPA then test scores, but good test scores can’t hurt you.

For Chapman, I think you have good chances. Idk imo your stats seem more private-school attractive, but maybe that’s just my thoughts.

unfortunately, it’s going to be tough. I think UCI’s averages are usually like 4.01 gpa and 1873 sat. You really need to do better on the SAT if you want to have a decent chance.

You don’t have the best chance, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt to apply. Admissions were absolutely brutal this year at all the UCs. I got waitlisted with a 3.9 and a 2010 SAT.

My best advice is to keep your grades up senior year. I was really struggling with Honors Physics first semester, and ended with a 79% in the class, which very possibly could have been the difference between accepted and waitlisted.

After this years admissions rates, I’d say UCI is a reach for you right now. You need to get your weighted GPA (make sure you check which honors classes get credit for UC’s) up to at least 3.8, which is the bare minimum. Also try to get your SAT to around 1900.

If you’re low income or first generation, then you’ll have an easier time, and won’t need stats as high as the ones i just posted.

I think I barely got in with my UC weighted 3.53 GPA but i did have a 1960 SAT and 31 ACT (which is about 2140 SAT) and more than 300 or so community hours and had leadership in clubs. First of all, your GPA isn’t set yet as you still have to finish this semester, and try to bring up your GPA. Do try and take the ACT since people tend to do better in one or the other and it’s usually a pretty big difference. I think the internship can help you a lot, too, but I’m not sure how much exactly. But yeah, I did have the 6 AP classes during senior year and most of our stats are sorta similarish.

As for xpaulinabearx, you just see which classes are weighted, which one’s aren’t, and take all the classes from 10th and 11th grade to get your GPA. All honors classes aren’t weighted, only some are with the UC system, but I’m pretty sure all the AP classes are. Also, only 8 semesters are weighted, so if you took 4 AP classes, for example, during sophomore year, nothing in junior year would be weighted. Do realize freshmen year and senior year aren’t included, but they only look at which classes you’re taking during those years, so it’s best to just go for as many AP classes as possible for senior year and try your best not to get a D or F in any of them.

I just calculated my UC GPA for sophmore and Jr. year, and it comes out to be a 3.67 Not that great, but I hope my personal statements will make up for it! I’m also going to be taking the ACT just to see if I score higher than the SAT…(I didn’t even study for the first SAT I took and got 1800…so I’ll probably get at least 2000 if I study.)

3.67 does sound a lot better, and yeah, I do have to say a lot is riding on the ACT/SAT now…But meh, you should try to get leadership in some club in school just to make up for something, since your EC’s will make up your resume. The average GPA for people who did get in was a 4.01, so yeahh, GPA is under standards, and you do factor in each year it is harder to get in >.>. Good luck and also, you should try for more colleges, UCI shouldn’t be your top school unless you really want to go there, hahahha

Is the English major at UCI really competitive? I’m thinking it’s not…right? So do I have a better chance at getting in? I’m pretty confident i’ll do well on the ACT…and since i’m taking 3 SAT Subject tests (aren’t necessary anymore for my class) I think I have a better advantage?

Haha, that’s not what i’m saying…i’m just saying if English isn’t as competitive as like Bio or Business, then won’t I have a better chance at getting into UCI…lol

Well, in short, you can get in and instantly change your major to anything you want, which they know, so that you don’t just get in as say, Hispanic Studies major, get in since there’s not too many of them, then change your major to Biology before schools starts. In the end, for UCI, I don’t think major or race or any of that matters that much, it’s just a numbers game.
