Chances?

I am a junior at a private Catholic high school who will be applying to Tulane Early Action this fall and I was hoping you guys could make a rough estimation on my changes of admission.

The stats

I've visited Tulane and loved it. The Creative Pre-Med Scholars Program interests me as well. Tell me what you think. Thanks!

(I've taken 20 honors/AP courses to this point currently in AP English, AP Biology. Next year: AP Psychology, AP Economics, AP Government, AP English, and maybe AP Chemistry I've also been a member of our schools choir, and am founding an Investors Club next year!)

You should have a very good chance. The key is to not only apply EA (you might consider SCEA also), but apply as early as you possibly can. Even within the EA deadlines and process, those that apply even earlier improve their chances. Also, show strong interest by really thinking about why you want Tulane and by attending some local Tulane events and/or visiting the school. Well, you already visited so be sure they have that fact in your file.

One thing though, your UW GPA cannot change because your school changes its point system. UW GPA is always what you would have on a traditional 4.0 scale with no weighting for honors or AP courses. So for example, if you have 2 A’s and 2 B’s, you have a 3.50 UW, even if 2 of those courses are AP courses. There are online programs where you can plug in your grades and get your UW GPA. In any case, it seems likely yours is fine for Tulane.

Thanks Fallenchemist!

It is good to know that my GPA is acceptable. In regards to the GPA improving with the switch, it is very possible unless I am mistaken. Since 93-100 is an A at our school, a 92 would be a B+. When converted to the ten-point scale of 90-100, that B+ becomes an A-, therefore increasing the weighted and unweighted GPA’s.

Of course you know more than I do but that’s just what I’ve been hearing!

And how much does SCEA help? Is it a lot better to do than EA?

Thanks again

Oh, OK. I was thinking something else when you said a ten point scale. So we were not using the same definitions. Now that I understand what you mean, yes it is absolutely possible your GPA will rise, given the 4.0 convention and how your school will now translate your grades into it. In fact, unless you had no grades between 90-93, 80-83, etc. it would have to rise. I also think your school is smart to make that change, since most schools use that criteria of 90-93 being an A-. I think Tulane does as well, which I think is good. My S goes to a university where there are no ± grades, and his GPA would be about 0.2 better if they had.

As far as SCEA, I would say yes it is. Tulane created the SCEA for one main reason, to use it as a gauge of true interest in the school. Even though it still is non-binding, you are making a “sacrifice” of not applying early elsewhere, so it tells Tulane you really would like to go there. In talking with one of the admissions officers not long ago, they also made the same point.

Thank you for your input! Hopefully I’ll end up part of the Wave!

Good luck!
