Hello my new College Confidential friends! This is my first post, so take it easy on me. I’ve officially begun my college search, so you’ll be hearing from me from time to time.

I’m currently a junior at Brookwood High School in Snellville, GA and I’m extremely interested in Auburn’s Professional Flight Management program. It seems to suit me perfectly considering I’m interesting in business as a backup plan to my piloting career. I just need to know, what are my chances of getting into Auburn University? Also, in support of my interest in aviation, I have taken a Flight Operations course at our county vocational high school.

As of now, I have a 2.58 unweighted GPA. My percent average is around an 81, so I’m an average B student. I know this is well below Auburn’s standards, but I’m just trying to get an idea. Here are the rest of my credentials:

Academics (as of now)
23 on ACT (without calculator and studying; will take again prepared; confident I will score at least a 26-28)
2.58 unweighted GPA (will not receive a weighted GPA until I take my three AP classes senior year; I plan on raising this to at least a 2.8 if at all possible this late in the game)

Extracurriculars (as of now)
1 season of football
1 season of wrestling
2 years of German Club (treasurer one year; hopefully a higher position senior year)
1 job with the family business
1 year of SGA
1 season Brookwood Youth Lacrosse Association Assistant Coach
Foreign exchange trip to Germany for cultural exposure. I’ve also been exposed to other countries like Sudan, Egypt, Tunisia, Austria, France, etc.

Awards
3rd place winner of Flight Operations State Competition
Gold Level Work Ready Program Certificate
Flight Operations Certificate of Recognition

I believe that’s about it. Please note that a lot of the extracurriculars will also be participated in during senior year. Also, since my academics aren’t so great, I want to apply after my first semester of senior year so they will at least have my APs to consider. Will applying during the last round of admissions reduce my chances of admission? If you’ve read up to here I appreciate it! So, there you have it. What are my chances of getting into Auburn University?

The link at the bottom should provide you with all of the information you need to see where you stack up with Auburn’s freshmen in 2010. To be honest, you really need to improve your GPA. For example, 56% of Auburn’s freshmen had a GPA of 3.75 or better. Only 4.5% had a GPA between 2.5 and 2.99. Also the average ACT score was 26.9. 19.7% of freshmen scored between 18-23, and 50% were between 24-29.
As to extra-curriculars, most kids these days have many many activities in which they are involved. It is a subjective measure as to what each college values and what makes a candidate stand out in relation to others.
With your GPA, it would be advantageous to score as high as possible on the ACT. Search this site (CC) for study tips and try to bring your score into the mid to high 20’s. I’m not sure when you apply will make a difference in the acceptance rate. If I were you, I would apply earlier rather than later so you have an earlier decision from Auburn and know where you stand. Good luck!

Senior grades do not count. AU is a reach for you, but you never know!

Hmm – not so sure about the senior grade exclusion if you apply after the 1st semester of your senior year, which is certainly possible at AU. If you have a tremendous 1st semester senior year and show marked improvement over previous semesters, it certainly could help your chances. Take some challenging courses as well. This goes a long way in increasing your admission possibilities.

All variables being considered however, your GPA really does need to improve. You mentioned that your avg. is an 81% – the low B range is sort of relative – some high schools consider this in the C-C+ zone, so improving this should be priority one for you.

Thank you for all the input guys! As for applying after my first semester of senior year, I didn’t know whether applying so late (third round of admissions) would decrease my chances of acceptance.

Audellmom, I do need to bring up my GPA and average, and I’m taking three AP classes next year. So, hopefully that helps out a bit. Percentage wise, what do you think my chances are?

-Three AP classes will really help – will demonstrate your willingness to challenge yourself.

-Wanting to enroll in the flight program may help as well – I’m assuming that this is an unusual major. What school is the aviation program associated – business? Something else you may want to consider is choosing a school where the admit standards are fairly loose: ex. Human Sciences has the most forgiving ACT score avg. of 24.9. I’m assuming other factors (GPA) may be more favorable as well. Even though aviation management is (possibly?) in the business school, you may be able to dovetail something together program-wise within a school like human sciences that would work for you, who knows what creative major/minor or double majors could be crafted. Keep in mind that getting in is the first hurdle. Switching schools once you’re in (and doing well) is always possible later on down the road.

-Being OOS will NOT help at all, unless you don’t need financial aid. In that case, being a full-pay has advantages. (Sorry to those who may be offended by that notion, but this is a reality of admission)

If you get your ACT score up (2010 non-resident avg. score was 27.6, even more than the overall general avg.), improve your GPA, and develop some sort of communication with an admissions rep in your area and explain your situation and what you’re doing to improve your stats – much better odds. I can’t give you a hard number or a percentage because who knows who will apply when you do – your chances will correlate with the demographics of those in the next application pool.

Do consider which school you apply to within AU, this will make a big difference.

Yes, Flight Management is in the business school. I don’t plan on applying for financial aid, so that possibly increasing my chances is welcome news.

What you’re saying is you want me to apply for one school, but then change schools once I’m admitted, right?

Well, depending how badly you want to go to Auburn, this could be within the realm of possibility. I wouldn’t necessarily endorse the practice, but I suppose I wouldn’t take it off the table either. Some schools within universities are easier to get into than others, just as some programs need people to keep them viable. It all depends on institutional need or demand.

I would add that once enrolled in any particular school, that school’s programs should be given serious consideration as to how they could fit into your career plans. :)

Alright. I’ll definitely take that option into serious consideration. Thank you!
