Chances?

I really want to go to Vanderbilt, but I don't know if I even have a chance. What do you think??

Your math SAT score is higher than the 75% for Vanderbilt, but I'm pretty sure your verbal is at the 25% or lower. I don't think you'll be cut much slack since you've lived here for 13 years. Your GPA is just a little low. Your ECs are good. Overall, your academic stats are good too.

I think you definitely have a shot.

does it help at all if i'm tri-lingual, and English wasn't my first language?

A&S or Engineering?

Hey, I didn't know you were trilingual. Extra points for diversity! Vanderbilt needs that.

You'll probably get a little break since English isn't your first language, but not a big one since you've been living here for 13 years.

I'd say you have a very good shot.

A&S, I wan't to go Poli sci / Econ.

I don't do the chances responses; I'm in no position to comment intelligently.

Just do a thoughtful application. If you have good AP's from 11th grade, those help. Washington state and your family background helps as does 4 years of one sport and band.

Best wishes. Have you done a campus visit?

No campus visit yet, although i've heard some not so good tales about it. Of course, I'm in no position to comment on it, as I've never seen it myself. BTW, Does vanderbilt have a good band program?

Vandy's band program is amazing! I don't know how admissions factors it into their decision-making, but I'm sure your strong involvement in Marching Band will be of special interest to them.

One of my d's hallmates is in the band - she loves it and thought it gave her a real social boost as a freshman to be included in such an active group. My d's a flutist and struggled with the decision of whether to participate (I can't remember if there's an audition, though I'm sure there must be). The Band kids started orientation a week earlier than the other freshman, and her job required her to stay through that week, so she couldn't even try out - I think she still regrets this somewhat.

If you have any specific questions about the band, I'm sure I could answer them, either through PM or on this thread.

I think you have a really good shot...

if you are interested in the marching band, email the dean of the music school for some additional information regarding what instruments are needed, tryouts, scope of commitment etc.
they need marching band people every year--which instrument depends on the people who graduate and have to be replaced.
It could be a nice boost to your application.

Make sure your recs are excellent and write an insightful and excellent essay--they make a huge difference.

good luck and visit the campus. pay no attention to the scuttlebut re: visiting. some kids like one school and others don't. you have to make the choice, not them.

My kid hated Northwestern, others love. Hated JHU, others love. Lukewarm Tulane--others love. It just depends. You will know if it is the right school for you by visiting.

Thanks Ilovedogs and musictoad... I appreciate it. I will contact the music department and inquire about the band. Anyone else????
