Hey guys,
I'm a soon to be hs senior with a weighted gpa of a 3.5 and act of 33. I am in speech, business professionals of america, finance club, and model un. i have a tremendous upward trend going 3.0 freshman, 3.0 sophomore, and 4.5 junior (all weighted). i am vice-president of a charity organization i started a year ago, and have had 3 paid jobs in the past 2 years.

do i stand a chance to not just get into iu, but get good scholarship $$?

Wow I didn’t realize that IU has become a lot stingier with their scholarships compared to when I came in 3 years ago. I can say that you’ll get in just fine. I had a similar sharp upward trend. I believe I had like 3.0-3.2 freshman year, 3.2 soph fall then suddenly 4.2 soph spring, 4.7 for both junior semesters, and 4.5 for senior fall. That positive trend will DEFINITELY help your case.

I don’t know the exact GPAs as it was like more than 3 years ago that I had to look at them but it was definitely close to those numbers.

also do you think w/ my stats i can get da into kelley? ik i won’t get it first try as i will obviously have to petition, but do i at least stand a chance?

Apply as soon as you can. On August 1, if possible. Petition for direct admit to Kelley as soon as you receive word that you have been accepted to IU. Kelley will love your ACT score. You won’t get any scholarships, but have an excellent chance of being a direct admit to Kelley by petition.

I wouldn’t throw the scholarships out the window just yet. Theres a little talked about sliding scale, by which I mean a higher ACT score can account for a lower GPA and vice versa. I’d call the scholarship office or whatever it is and see if they’ll give you the full breakdown. Idk if it will go as low as 3.5, but its worth a try, and if it does but you need say a 34, you’ll have time to raise that (although 33s pretty high already).

It rly depends on what other schools you’re applying to and what amount of scholarship money you’re willing to take. 33 Act is probably fine for admission (admission people know its not that diff from 35) but for hard a requirement (like IU excellence scholarship) it might be possible/necessary to bump it up a point to compensate for gpa; you’ll have to ask the scholarship people for the sliding breakdown.

cmb1292, where did you get this info about the supposed “sliding scale”? Do you have personal experience with it? My high school had no rank or GPA, so I spent a lot of quality time on the phone with the scholarship office this year and don’t think there is any such thing. On the FAQ page it says this.

What if I am off on one (or both) of the criteria by only 10 points or .01 GPA?

–Scholarships at IU are competitive. You must meet all specified criteria in order to receive that level of Automatic Academic Scholarship. There is no flexibility on meeting the criteria.

What if I meet one criterion and not the other?

You could have a 2400, been to the moon, and cured cancer, but if you have a 3.69, you won’t get a dime of IU Automatic scholarship money. You would probably get something else though.
