Go to a pretty tough private catholic school

Honors/AP: Honors Alegbra 1, Geometry Honors, AP US Government

Extra Curricular: Radio Club member (4 years) board member senior year, Taken 7 college classes online (2 probably won't count for much), Member stock market club (3 years), member Teen Awareness Club (4 years), staff writer for newspaper club (4 years), 150 hours community service hours senior year

1 teacher/1 counselor reccomendation

Your current stats put you at the lower end of the middle 50% of accepted students. Your gpa is in the bottom 25%, your ACT within the middle 50% but on the lower side of it, and your SAT scores also in the middle 50%.

In your favor is that you are from a private catholic school and I would say the 4 years of newspaper is a really great EC. Also the community service.

SCU rejects about half of its freshman applicants. You scores are sitting in the middle 50% of the accepted scores. I don’t know how to wizard that into math, but I would say you are a 50/50 candidate–good enough candidate to handle the workload at SCU, but you probably need to stand out in some way now… a really special recommendation letter, an essay that really is memorable, etc. You are competing against a bunch of kids that have similar stats that the school needs to literally “pick and choose” what kind of freshman class they are creating. SCU, like most privates, do not simply take all 4.0, 2200+ SAT students. They want a mix of students, not just academically, but in their profiles and interests.

Good luck!

from a central california public school, ~800 kids
3.57 UW GPA, 3.93 W
Grades: As and Bs split pretty evenly I think, with 5 (yikes) Cs sprinkled throughout my transcript. However, I am expecting to have really strong grades this year (with 3 APs)
1 ap soph yr, 4 jr yr (BIG MISTAKE), 3 sr yr = 8 total
my grade trend is: good fresh yr, a little worse soph year, worse jr yr, great sr yr
5 on AP lit test, 4s on euro hist and us hist
class rank: #32/15% with W GPA (as of the end of last year)
SAT: 1800 (not going to submit this)
ACT: 29 (definitely using this instead)
SAT IIs: waiting on results
moderately strong ECs - newspaper, special biotech program, Pony Club (non-school related), several clubs, founded harry potter club, internship at a winery/vineyard, tutored in English, weekend job at a horse training barn for several years. that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.

@Lily

Your gpa and ACT is right in the middle of the “middle 50%,” which is a stronger place to be than the OP’s stats. I think your key is to really make sure you stand out on your application… writing about something that stands for who you are as a person inside and as a result how you show up for others in the world.

SCU really stands for “whole person” education, with a strong stand for supporting students to become thoughtful, ethical people in the larger world after they leave the college. So what do you bring to this campus? How have you explored your passions, lived life, what have you learned and how do you already interact with others in the community with your ECs?

The problem with being in the “middle of the middle” in terms of stats is being able to stand out on the application–something that makes an adcom say to themselves at least subconsciously “I wanna meet this applicant”–because in the end, you are looking for an “invite” to join the SCU community.

Best of luck.

Hi cgjackson,

I like the enthusiasm in your post–you seem to be positive and confident in your abilities in an attractive way. That’s a good thing. Your ECs are good and the soccer is pretty great. The dual-enrollment points toward college-readiness as well. Your profile seems like it fits the SCU model… just work on getting solid SAT/ACT scores!

to the OP, it is a reach school, but if you write solid essays i feel like you’d improve your chances.

the next two posters are definetely matches. how about me? haha

@vernon

Any chance of retaking the SAT in time to boost your scores? Even just a 20 point bump in Math and a 20 point bump in writing would sharpen that aspect of your application. Are you trying to enter as a STEM major? If so, it would be very good to see a bump in the Math part.

I love that you play and teach a classical indian instrument - be sure that shows up somewhere in your application. Same with the photography.
