Chances?

I am a Caucasian female at a nationally recognized public school in New Jersey. My highest ACT score is 32 and my SAT score is 1890 without superscoring and 1910 with it. I took 1 AP class last year and am taking 2 this year. I also took SAT IIs in Math I and Chemistry. My GPA is not as high as it could be. It is a 3.655 because I did not do great sophomore year, but I have worked harder last year. Despite a harder course load and the normal stresses of junior year my GPA for last year alone was a 3.83. I have earned a varsity letter sophomore and junior year. I am a soccer referee for young children and I am an EMT. I did an internship in a law firm this summer.

What do you think my chances are?

Well, its really hard to say since most liberal arts schools try to look at applications holistically. But JUST by stats Colgate’s average GPA for acceptees is 3.75. It’s average SAT is around 2020-2100. So just statistically you’re not in a great position. Bu t again, colleges are looking for a good fit not necessarily all the right scores.

You’re probably toward the lower half of the Colgate applicant pool right now. . . but Colgate admits a wide variety of students and does not even want all geniuses or all 4.0 students. It really seeks well rounded, interesting, creative, energetic students. You could spend a weekend at a college filled with dull geniuses who study all the time or spend a weekend with interesting people who have many interests. Colgate would be the latter.

So, will you get in? It’s unclear, but it you retook the SAT and upped your scores a little more, maybe. Or if you got great recc letters or wrote a clever personal essay. Or if they just like hard workers who don’t give up and keep raising their GPA. You never know unless you apply. The worst that could happen is you end up going somewhere else. If you don’t apply, though, you’ll never know.
