Chances.

I will be an incoming transfer student. Probably going in as a junior (or a second sem sophomore). Applying to Bryn Mawr, Smith, Mount Holyoke, possibly Wellesley, and definitely Marist (parent's choice & assumed safety).

I graduated from a small town HS where most students go onto state schools.

In HS:
-Graduated with ~3.4
-ACT 24
- Only AP course taken was AP Art, but I did take both College English and College Algebra my senior year. Other courses were about the average HS load (4 English, 4 Math, 3 Foreign lang, 3 Science, 4 History/Social Studies, 4 electives).
-Class was ~175, graduated in top 15-20%.

EC:
-Secretary (10-11) then President (12) of French Club.
-Heavily involved in equestrian riding (from age 8 up until last year). At least 20+ hours per week; I owned my own horse.
-Band member, 9-10. Wind Ensemble 11-12. NYSSMA Gold medal 9-12.
-Independent flute quartet 10-12. NYSSMA 100, performed at weddings & events.

Held a job for two years as an Animal Care Tech (10-11).

College:
First year (state school):
-3.2. Personal issues held me back, but that will be the subject of my essay.
-Member of equestrian team.

Second year (this year: community college to save money):
-3.9 so far.
-Founder and President of a positive body image club on my campus
-If I maintain this average I will definitely be invited to join Phi Theta Kappa (Honor Society for 2 year college students)
-I will be taking at least ONE, hopefully two or three, Honors courses next semester.

I've always been a very strong writer, so my essay will be great. I will also have a great recommendation letter from my Psychology prof, and at least one other from a second prof.

I'm mostly wondering what Smithies think about this. Do you know people at Smith who got in with a similar app? I'm a little nervous considering any "chance me" thread I've seen for the colleges I'm applying for are basically Ivy League applications. It's kind of ridiculous.

Thanks!

From what I’ve absorbed from this forum, I think your application could go either way at Smith. I think your writing skills will be the swing factor. Why do you love Smith above all others? If you can make a strong case for why you need to be there to complete your growth as an individual and student, you’ll have a shot.

Good luck.
