I go to a Catholic school also, im not sure if that would help or not at BC.
Couneslor Rec, should have been really good.

I know that all my academic stuff is okay, its the other things im more nervous about.

Teacher Recs: didn’t read, were def. positive but most likely not eloquent or very detailed (these teachers write a ton of them very quickly)

Essay: so I really liked my essay and got really positive feedback from those who read it. im applying to many other schools obviously, but i do really like BC. Here’s why I’m worried: I wrote about being a gay catholic. Emphasis on the i can accept my sexuality and still compromise it with my religion stuff. Now I know that BC, like all colleges, is open-minded, but I go to a Catholic school and I know how many of the teachers and administrators would view my essay.

ECs-decent amount, but not really any for all 4 years and not a ton of leadership because i moved from CT to MI my junior year.

thank god youre not my competition.

Dear stewta4 : Your profile statistics are strong across the board.

Chances are however that your essay topic will be seen as weak since your self-exploration is likely to have been a very inwardly focused piece. If we had the chance to discuss the essay in general, I would have recommended that you take your cues from your senior year leadership role (student government) and then showed how your own personal experiences were part of what shaped you as a leader. By starting from a leadership position, you are immediately showing your interaction with others and a sense of building community.

In closing, it is not your sexuality that will be the lightening rod in your essay; rather, the question will be whether the essay actually demonstrated how you augment the Boston College freshman class in some positive ways. [One is forced to question why you would now “be worried” knowing that you had written a piece that you clearly see as controversial to Boston College.]

Well the piece is a lot about my interaction with others and how i plan to act in the future ( i talk about how I never want to enclose myself in a “liberal bubble” and close myself off from so many ppl) and it fit the prompt, from what i heard they like to personally show yourself. The only reason I’m worried is stumbling across a close-minded, consevative admissions officer. The reason I didn’t want to write about my leadership position was that when i wrote the essay (in early october) i had only been in that position for a month, there wasnt a ton to write about. But thank you for the input!
