What are my EA chances?

Predictions while I wait for my damn letter.

You're in.

No question.

I cannot wait to see you there next fall (contingent on if I get in of course!).

Good luck w/ the rest of senior year.

--G

Thanks.

I really hope so - I think I wrote a brilliant essay (if I may be conceited enough to say so) - it was just quirky enough to fit with the prompts.

I hope to see you there (if I get accepted, I'll probably end up at Chicago - I applied a few places regular decision but I really really like Chicago).

This might be a little bit of a wierd question, but does Chicago have a band (as in, the marching kind)? I was just sort of curious, I have seen on a number of these threads that people applying have been pretty active in band.

Not a marching band, I don't believe.

Great chances.

Ahhh, so many people in my school already got their acceptances/decisions...

It's a class of around 70 but we already have 1 brown, 1 dartmouth, 1 columbia, and 1 swarthmore...

hopefully 1 chicago...

Good luck on your admissions though. Have you visiting the school? I'm headed there either this weekend or next, but until then I'm curious as to what anyone else liked/ disliked about the school.

Yes, I visited my friend there (she was doing a summer program) and took a tour/information session/interview. I really liked the proximity to the city without the dangerousness/shadyness/etc. I also just liked the whole atmosphere from the students and campus. The dorms I saw were really nice too.

we have similar stats. i got 50 points lower on the sat and two points higher on the act though. isnt that weird. HOPEFULLY we'll both get in ea! good luck!

Thanks. Good luck to you too! :)

myketb: Looks like UofC has a band: http://band.uchicago.edu/

The thing that I see that is worrisome is the 2nd decile class rank combined with less than stellar SAT II's. I think that your essays and rec's are going to be considered pretty carefully.

are you serious ohio_mom? they don't even require satII's, plus, those are really good scores!

brooke_u,

Yes - I have watched 2 sessions of U Chicago admits. The OP has a good chance with good essays. Not a shoo-in, however: SAT CR+M are around median of matriculated students last year (remember accepted scores will be higher), class rank is below median of matriculated students - the vast majority were in top 10%.

My son was in a similar position last year - 1460 M+V, about 13% class rank - he was accepted RD, but I am guessing that it was his essays/ec's that made the different between acceptance and waitlist or rejection.

It is very important (and very difficult) to maintain focus throughout senior year, since deferrals and wl's may come into play. I feel badly about being a wet blanket - but I feel that it is important to provide as much information as I have been able to gather.

Also, (I can't edit now) - I attended a French immersion camp two summers ago (Concorida Language Villages).

I agree with ohio_mom. You have a very good chance. However, a high GPA, relatively low class rank (for UChicago), and only decent SAT IIs suggest grade inflation. The reputation of your school might come into play. Do you know approximately how many students are in the senior class at your school?

I really don't think your SAT IIs are so low, especially because UChicago doesn't require them. But most applicants take them, do pretty well on them, and submit the scores. I don't think they'll help you or hurt you very much.

If it makes you feel any better, I think you will get in. We have very similar stats- my SATs and class rank are a little higher, but you have more APs. If your essay is really that good, you're definitely in. I'm also anxiously awaiting my EA decision. Good luck!

There are approximately 380 kids in my senior class - the cutoff for first decile is 4.23/3.89 and I'm 4.21/3.88, which suggests I'm probably around 39 or 40.

I really liked my essay - I thought I picked a topic that was just unique/quirky enough to fit the prompts/general style of essays.

Good luck to you, maybe I'll see you at U Chicago next year. :)

Good - you're only a whisker out of first decile, then. Best wishes for a fat envelope coming soon!

Yeah, I'm hoping that my rank isn't THAT much of an issue. And thanks. :)

My S's class rank was 185/405 with a 3.46 uw GPA, no SAT II's, no SAT I's for that matter, he took the ACT, and was accepted. It is hard to pin down chances, but as ohio_mom said, it's the essays that make the difference (S's were quite compelling).
