Sports:

Spring Track and Field (freshman and sophomore year)
Indoor Track and Field (freshman and sophomore year)
Football (4 years)

I play football at a very good school in athletics, in fact, we were the best in all of New Jersey according to Sports Illustrated. I took an official visit for football to Amherst this past weekend, and I loved it. I am not good enough in football to be one of the 14 players who are basically guaranteed acceptance. However, Coach Mills gave me “special” envelopes to send my application and recs in so that the admissions office will know that I am a football recruit and place my app in a seperate pile to discuss my chances with Coach Mills

Anyone who could offer me insight into my chances of acceptance without football would benefit me alot.

Your ECs are good, your grades are good, and the football thing will probably give you a leg up, but your SATs and SATIIs are a bit weak for a school as selective as Amherst. Academically, I think Amherst is a stretch for you and if you get in, you're going to have to work your butt off to keep up. Apply if you think you can handle it, but consider it a long shot and make sure you apply to other schools where the median SAT (CR + M) scores are closer to your score.

Just as a reference, I had better grades, SATs, and ECs, and didnt get in. However, football may tip you in. Good luck.

Apply and find out. Amherst is a reach for everyone. There are no absolutes in the elite college admission process. It seems as though you are working hard, and succeeding, and that will look good. Can you retake the SAT's??? They are a bit low. But maybe football will be a hook. Work on your essays - they are very important, especially since Amherst has no interviews. And my advice to everyone (even kids with 2400 SAT's) is "love your safety." Good luck. You won't know until you apply.

Don't sweat to hard with the SATs, I had a 640 on the Writing section and got into Amherst, if you can turn that score around with an extremely quality essay like I did, then you shouldn't have that big of a problem. I would however try to make sure your verbal and math are good.

I'd say you are a quality applicant, but... so are 9 out of every 10 people rejected.

I'll repeat what evitajr said, "love your safety", I applied to both of my safeties at the same time I applied to Amherst for that reason. I'd put a lot of focus into looking through those schools that people label 2nd rate to realize that they're are hundreds of wonderful schools that could possibly be a safety for you.
