-Applying for National Honors Society

Currently a junior, should be able to get my GPA up to around 3.8 weighted at least. I don't have access to my unweighted at the moment. I've taken almost every honors class available and am in two APs. Not sure about class rank, but should be at or near top 10%. Attending private Catholic school, so I've done quite a bit of mandatory community service. As much as I regret it, I kind of lazed through freshman and first half of sophomore year, and now it's come back to haunt me GPA-wise.

Well, it depends on what school you’re applying too. Biological Science, Science and Engineering, and Carlson are considerably more selective than the others. I would say you have a very good chance at the less selective colleges and a good chance at the more selective ones.

^ I disagree, and with proof. I got into CBS with a 28 ACT and 3.67 GPA

^3.67 weighted? Because unweighted mine’s probably closer to a 3.4…like I said, I’ve been an underachiever  Also, what extracurriculars did you take?

Yeah, but I think your act makes up for it. As for EC’s I was decent, a few things here and there and was dedicated to a couple of things as well.

Flashsizzlebam exactly what are you disagreeing with? It seems beyond dispute that some colleges like CSE, CBS, and Carlson are more selective than others like CLA, CFANS, and CEHD. This table provides strong evidence of the fact [Academic Profile](Academic Profile of Fall 2022 Admitted Freshman Applicants by College | Office of Admissions). How else do you explain what happened to HSKid22 where he was admitted to CLA but deferred from CSE? Are there people who are admitted to CSE but deferred from CLA? Your stats although somewhat low for CBS are really not that low. According to the above link 8% of CBS admitted students had an ACT lower than yours. It’s important to note that the above link is for admitted students not enrolled students. It is overwhelming likely that many students with extremely strong applications (think 34+ ACT) apply to the University of Minnesota but few attend. Conversely, students with weaker applications that are admitted are much more likely to attend.

I was disagreeing with you in that you said he only had a very good chance for the less selective ones, I think he has a very good chance from both. I think he has great EC’s and a good class rank, plus his act is almost a point above average. I think race also played some cards in my case, but who knows, I think he’ll get in.

Thanks to both of you, if I do apply it’ll most likely be to CSE. Unfortunately, as a middle-class white male, I don’t have a lot to contribute diversity-wise, but hopefully that doesn’t play a huge factor  Are they big on essays and recommendations? Because those will probably be solid, writing is one of my strong suits.

Ah ok that makes more sense. I guess this probably comes down to various interpretations of what a “good” or “very good” chance.

Unfortunately the University of Minnesota does not require either essays or recommendations. You can certainly submit a recommendation but i doubt it will have much weight. I do not know if they will accept an essay if you want to write one.
