Hi, im currently in 7th grade and im going to apply for 9th grade at andover. i am in 8th grade honors math (algebra 1). i have played the violin for 5 years and football for 3. i volunteer at my local animal shelter and im bilingual. i speak korean and english. do u think i can get into andover? also im thinking about going to the summer camp at andover. do u think this would help my chances of getting into andover?

I can’t tell you much from what you have given me. What I can tell you is that it will now depend on your interviews, grades, and SSATs

i havent taken the ssat or done a interview yet but i have straight a’s. when do u think i should take the interview? is it better to do the interview in the spring or the fall?

First, if you can go to summer camp at Andover (and can afford it), you should definitely do it! As far as I know, it won’t help you get in, but it will be a great experience. And just being away from home doing the program is a good learning experience for boarding school.

As for interviewing, you’ll do that in the fall - sometime between September and mid-January, when the applications are due.

THe one thing you can do this spring that will help is to take the SSAT. It won’t count for your application, but it will give you a chance to see how you do. Then you’ll know what section(s) you need to practice before taking it for real next fall. Knowing your score will also help you decide which schools to apply to.

I would also suggest taking the summer to do a lot of research on many schools. Read threads here about the cultures of different places and put together a LIST of schools to investigate/ visit further. Applying to only one school is never wise. Applying to only Andover is foolish, no matter what your credentials. Look around a bit and you and your parents will hopefully several schools that you would be thrilled to attend.
