Chances?

Hello, this is my first post here and I've recently been looking into NYU, would really love to attend and I plan on applying to CAS ED1. I am a sophomore in high school, with only a week left before summer break, so this school year is almost over. I just recently understood how seriously I have to take high school to get into a great college, and basically messed up my first two years of high school.

I attend a magnet school that is ranked 2nd in my state. I guess my course load could be considered rigorous: Last year I took 5 honors classes, this year I took 1 AP and 4 honors and next year I am taking 2 APs and 3 honors. I am finishing this year at around a 3.0 GPA and I would like the estimate that I finished last year with a 3.2. Of course for next year I would love to strive for a around a 3.9-4.0 (pretty sure I can do it)

As for SAT scores I am planning on studying a lot over the summer and my goal is 2100+. Also over the summer I plan on volunteering and maybe getting a summer job.

Finally for my extracurriculars, I recently understood the importance of those as well. Having none freshman year, I was a part of SGA this year and plan on being in it for the rest of high school, and I will probably run for a leadership position (class VP or secretary). For next year I also plan on joining Model UN and doing cross country or track, joining NHS and Beta Club, if my grades are good enough, and finding a few more clubs to join (my school doesn't offer very many). Also, I'm African-American if that helps.

I know my chances may be low, but what do you think? If it is a reach for me to get in to NYU, what would you suggest I do to make myself a better candidate?

To be honest with you, you will have to move your GPA way up. Try aiming for above a 4.0. Do lots of volunteer work and extracurriculars. You need to do stuff to make yourself stand out. Although NYU does look at the measure between the grade you got and how hard the class is, you probably need to aim for all A’s your next year in high school. I had the same problem where freshman year I got a 3.0 and raised it to a 3.7 to now a 4.4. You still have a chance though, so keep trying hard and you will get it.

Thanks for the honest advice, and those GPAs I posted are under weighted btw, not sure how to really calculate weighted. And just saw your thread, good luck on getting in.

Also, if I don’t have a chance at CAS, do you think I could get LSPed?

Bump .

List me your schedule and Ill find your weighted GPA for you. And ya, I think it’s a possibility that you could get LSP’d. When you apply you are supposed to pick your second choice of a major also, so you will be considered for that one if you don’t get into your first one.

NYU will look at your UNweighted GPA, not your weighted GPA.

Average GPA at NYU is equivalent to an A- average, so you need to work on brining your GPA up substantially. Aim for 2100+ SAT scores to stand any sort of decent chance.

^ The one person I was really nervous to hear from, haha.

But anyway, thank you both for the replies, really helpful.
