Chances

Hi guys I'd like to know if I could get accepted into either CMU's school of computer science or engineering. Here's some of my information...

-white male
-from central PA

grades:
-mainly A's with a few B's
-97 weighted gpa

AP's:
Comp Sci - 5
Calc ab - feel i got a 5 (didnt get the scores back yet)
Stats - feel i got a 5
Chem - feel i got a 3 or 4
taking physics c and calc bc senior year

extra curriculars:
im very interested in mathematics and computer science. i was in a club where i made the website and have an co-op next year with the schools IT department.

I am a boy scout and I plan on getting my eagle scout award in the next few months

I play tennis, baseball, and I bowl all for the school.

I do community service for my church including altar serving.

I have been working since halfway through my sophmore year.

standardized testing:
didnt do as well as my grades show....
SAT's - 690 Math, 580 Reading, 560 writing
SAT subject tests 69 Math II, and 670 Chemistry

havent gotten the latest class rank yet but im probably around 40 of 160

please be honest about my chances of acceptance into CMU. Also i did attend an information session/college visit there.

I think that you’ll need to raise your sat scores…math should be at least in the mid 700s and both reading and writing should be in the mid 600 to high 600. Also if you have time try retaking SAT2 and raise it to the mid 700 or 800.
I’m aiming for CMU as well, good luck!

No chance.

Unfortunately I am afraid your class rank and SAT scores are out of range for computer science or engineering at CMU. It might be a good idea to look at other less selective colleges as well.

I attended an info session last month and was told engineering applicants would need a 750 or higher on both SAT math reasoning and math II subject test to be competitive.

Try the ACT, you might find that you do much better on it than the SAT. The subject test scores are going to hurt you, but that can probably be overcome. But something definitely needs to go up as far as testing goes. How many times have you taken the SAT? How much did you prepare?
