Chances

Hey I am very interested in ending Rutgers - New Brunswick (Business) and I wondering what I can do to maximize my chances of getting accepted. I'll begin by noting that I am Asian male attending a private high school in Northern NJ.

GPA

Freshmen Year - 3.31 UW (3.46 W) 2 Honors
Sophomore Year - 3.9 UW (3.98 W) 1 Honors
Junior Year - 3.15 UW (3.49 W) 4 Honors
Average 3.45 UW 3.64 W

I know I really screwed my Junior year which is by far the most important year of high school. The 4 honors classes were a big jump and I just simply did not put enough effort. Will my poor Junior year ruin my chances of getting in? If I get a perfect GPA for the beginning of Senior year, will that make a significant impact?

SAT

I took the SATs two times and I'm studying very hard for the test in October.

1st - 630M 520 CR 570 W Overall 1720
2nd - 640M 530 CR 600 W Overall 1770

I know, statistically, a 3rd SAT won't improve much from the previous tests, but I have been studying much more compared to before, especially CR. What will I need to strive to get considering my GPA and my other factors?

In addition, is it worth the time studying for the SAT II? If I do take them, I'll probably take US History and Physics.

Extra Curricular

Sadly, I think this is another weak point. I joined around 5-6 clubs, but the only high position I have is VP of the Financial Club. I'm applying to the Business School, so hopefully that will help. I also running for a position in student council this year and think I might get it since I came in 2nd to a student who just graduated. I also did a track for my junior, but did nothing great. I do have alot of service hours though, including a ton in the Philippines, my home country.

Other

My recommendations won't be anything special since I was pretty quiet in school. But, I think I can make a very strong essay.

My best advice would be for you to take a strong academic program in your senior year (at least 4 academic subjects) and achieve strong grades.
You can view the middle 50% SAT/ACT score ranges for our business school at [Rutgers Admissions | GPA’s and SAT’s of previously admitted students, by school](http://admissions.rutgers.edu/Academics/AdmissionsProfile.aspx). Keep in mind that we will use your best individual math, critical reading, and writing scores from multiple test administrations. SAT II (Subject tests) are not necessary and we do not use letters of recommendation during our decision-making process…The main focus of our review is academics.

People in my school had 1400s on their SATs, and no honor classes and they got in. I think you have a 75% chance of getting in. Take your SAT for a third time and do stellar, increase your score by at least 50-60 points and youre a shoe in. Also, consider taking the ACT. I found it to be much easier than the SAT and I did better by 130 points (when converted to SAT score), 1750 SAT to 1880 ACT->SAT

1400 M & CR or 1400 M, CR and W?

I would apply to the other schools ,like the Arts and Sciences, as well. If you don’t get into the business school, maybe you will get into Arts & Sciences and you can always transfer later on as long as you do well and take the required courses. Don’t limit yourself to the Business school only if Rutgers is your first choice. I think you have a good shot at the others schools, but not sure about the business.

herozero1234- Are you referring to the 3 sections of the SATs or just the two??? 1400 is very low for Rutgers… The lowest I heard was 1550 and these kids are first generation college kids and come from very disadvantaged families.

Thanks a ton! Rutgers is my 1st choice so I’ll def try to apply to the other schools to increase my chances. I think I should get around a 1900 + with atleast a 600 in CR too so hopefully that will help my chances. Also, when is the best time to apply? Right after I get my SAT scores back?

Apply to SAS NB, Ru- Business NB, RU- Business Newark.

If you don’t get into RU Business school on Nb you can always transfer in from SAS but its very difficult.

As for your statistics, you seem average so its really important you improve the SATs. Seeing as you did improve 50 pts from the 1st time, you are most likely going to improve again.

Rutgers accepts the highest sections from the 3 times you take it. So even though this is not recommended by a lot of people. Study more for CR which is where i see you lack the 600 in. But, you still have to practice somewhat in the other sections.

If you can pull a 600 on the CR you improved your score by 70 pts which will make a big difference. It also means you won’t have to take the writing portion of the placement exam and get placed in expos automatically.

Also always, apply early. You can apply and indicate you are retaking it so if you don’t get accepted into business, then can recheck your application after the new scores come in.

Make sure you do better than your Weighted GPA now in your senior year classes so your weighted GPA goes up.
