Chances?

Im not gonna lie i copied and pasted from cornel, but im only posting on these two forms, cause i really wanna go to ethier cornel or brown

What are my chances for brown regualr decison and brown early decison?

Hi im a junior at a pretty competitive public high school, commack ny. We have the IB program so no clases that tender exclusivly to aps (bummer). I was not focused in my freshman year and im horrible at spanish (75) this is mirrored in my gpa.

I have about a 90 average unweighted and a 94 average weighted. This will change this year because im no longer as lazy and im in all ib classes which are weighted 10% (plus i improved my self educationally over the summer and im getting a 100 in math + physics every marking period only have the year to go).

We dont have class ranks but if id have to guess im somewhere around 25 out of 550, i should be higher .

psats = 800 math, 690 reading(will improve a lil), 620 writing(will improve ALOT)
only a little above mastary regents scores.

sat 2, chem screwed up 640, math 1 c 800, math 2 c(probably 800 (havent taken yet)), physics (havent taken yet but around 780), and us history (havent taken probablly around 720)

I took ap comp sci a-5
This year i will take ap stat(no class, expect to get 5), comp si ab(no class, expect to get 5), and physic(1st year ib class that is not geared toward ap test, expect to get 5), psychology(taking ib pschy, hope to get a 4), and us history(taking ib class hoping to get a 4)

NExt year i will continue to take higher level ib courses, and i look to take about 5 more aps(none of which will show up).

Extra curricular, president of young republicans, secreatary of debate team, active member in computer club, future enginers, math team, brainstormers, math, science, tech, honor societies, and comedy troupe

My grades have steadily improved over the years, even as i transitioned into ib classes from not even honors courses.

What are my chances for brown regualr decison and brown early decison?

you have so many "expected" scores it is rediculous. how could anyone tell you what your chances are when you only have "expected" scores. come back when you have reached real high school

hey dude um this is when i happen to be taking the tests. Expected means that iv taken enough of the freaking practice tests to give me a good enough idea in my mind of what my score will be... just ignore the fact that i said expected and tell me my chances as if those were the grade...

why is there so much hostility on the Internet? all i tried to do was ask a simple question of advice, and it seems like your pounding anger upon me. "reached real high school" I'm not exactly sure what that means man, i mean honestly, because i haven't taken the tests I'm going to take...

i think it IS hard to tell chances especially when scores can be completely lower or even higher than what you expect even with practice tests and also because you're only a junior (hence the "real high school" comment) and so much can happen in a year.

redbutton has a point, albeit said a bit harshly.

and... despite that... from the way you've presented yourself all I see is a list of scores.

and the scores aren't so impressive in themselves. that's not to say thhey aren't high/good scores, they just aren't sufficient by themselves. i'm gonna say that without a hook/good luck at cornell.

You are not well rounded. You may be a math beast, but so what? There will be hundreds like you with other talents in music, langauge, sports, etc. Not to be harsh, but your list of ECs strikes me as the list of a "weenie." Pick up some sports, or drama, or something that distinguishes you as artsy or athletic or write for the newspaper, etc. The only thing that jumps out as cool is young republicans, which, if you indeed are the president of, I wonder if Brown is neccesarily the right place for you (Brown is essesntially the Ivy version of Wessleyan). Your scores are fine, your grades are fine--stats wise you look like you have a decent shot, but, especially at a place like Brown, personality is key. PS-Secretary of the Debate Team is not exactly impressive. Awards in debate without a leadership position would look much better. Unless your prez or captain or founder, any leadership position like secretary or treasurer just looks pathetic, like you are trying to hard, but aren't good enough. You feel me? My advice is that you focus more on ECs this yr than school, b/c ur school work and test scores are in the ballpark, and Brown doesn't care much about sat2s so the 640 is not the end of the world. I got in with a 620 in bio and a 720 in us hist.

you guys are ridiculous, give the kid a break.

his or her scores are within range, grades, and ec's all put this person within the same fighting chance as many applicants.

though they haven't written anything in a short internet post that makes them seem like a shoo-in, they are a far cry from a rejectee. so stop trying to make yourselves feel better by making other people feel worst.

also, to the person who questioned whether brown would be the right place for this applicant just because they are a republican, you might ask yourself the same question. fundamental intellectual freedom is a hallmark of brown, and diverse thoughts and opinions go hand-in-hand with this.

come back after you take your tests.

thx for the advice, brown isent my top choice, my top is cornell which i will apply for ed probably and i will apply to brown rd, if i dont get into cornell theres pretty much no show at brown but hey...

Yeah i am a math guy... an extreamly good math guy lol, guess im not well rounded dam, um i did put i am an active member in comedy troupe, we put on a show each year, with sketch comedy written by students performed by students and watched by students (if any show up)

Um my major would be computer science, besiddes my ap comp sci gade there areent too many grades that show my intrest in the subject, but i will cover that on my application. I enter and do well on all sorts of computer competitions, american compter science leauge and internaltional problem solving contest, as well as computer catagory in lesef. Plus i plan to do summer research at a university in computer science for intell. Not to mention i will make mention of all the cool games/program/ projects i have done for my school in my ap

Thx for the critism/suggestions/ praise

Im sorry if I was rude. You seem like a good, consciencous dude, and you have a decent shot at Brown. If math is your thing and passion, so be it. I think I was a jerk, a little, because Im biased against math as a subject, at least the computational stuff, but I love the philosophical parts. Have you read any Wittgenstein or Godel? Also the republican thing is great, and would distinguish you at Brown, I just wondered why a right minded man like yourself would want to be around people who abhorr Bush, people who would not date a republican, who are actively and passionately--typically, democrat. thats all

gl with you endeavors

PS--Are you Jewish? I ask because of ur CC SCREENAME.

the main reason i am a reupublican is because the people around me are democrats, i just like argueing, i would have no problem being around people with other viewpoints, i would see it as insightful.

Um im half jewish on my dads side, but im an atheisit, weird combo eh?, republican, atheist, jewish, and brown. Boy oh boy i like being diffrent.

You didient come off as a jerk, rebutton did, u seem like a cool guy too

Its funny you should say this. Because Jew and atheist often go together. The famous German philosophers and existentialists were often Jewish, if only by birth. Most atheists, I would say are democrats, because they see themselves as "humanitarians" who have outgrown religion but believe in doing the right thing.

PS-I used to a republican, and pretty much for the same reason, I liked to argue. SO I AM not critical of ur party stance, however, I soon realized, that I was defining myself against my community as a form of rebellion, but that I truly was more liberal on certain issues than I gave myself credit for being. I see myself as an indi, and am usually disgusted by the whole political scene, but when it comes to Israeli politics, I think the Republicans do a much better job recognizing Israel as an exemplary nation plagued by terrorism, rather than a country which oppresses and occupies.
