Chances

My daughter applied to wash u regular decision but very early in the process. She has a 3.95 unweighted, atleast 7 ap classes, 32 act, drill team, NHS, ranked 40 of 506 In a very competitive texas public school. Wondering if we should visit and have her give an interview. She wants bio medical engineering. Also has an unbelievable art portfolio. Wanted to know her chances?

My son applied RD to WUSTL from the NOVA area (about the same GPA as your daughter, class rank top 3%, 9 APs, 2290 SAT, 2 varsity sports) and had an interview with a local alum. We are also going to visit WUSTL over the December break. One reason for the visit is so my son can see WUSTL before making final decisions as he really likes this school and the other is we have heard from this site, counselors at his school, and the WUSTL web site that showing interest beyond the application plays at least some role in the decision process. Therefore, I would suggest a visit and an interview.

My son is a Freshman engineering student at WashU. He applied RD with a 33 ACT (34 superscored), a 3.8 UW and 4.9 W GPA (top 2%), 11/550. 12 AP classes. Good extracurriculars (baseball/student government) and excellent recs. He did not visit the school before getting accepted but did interview locally with a parent of a WashU student (very informal).

Following acceptance, WashU will pay for students to visit. Frankly, I am glad that my son waited to visit the school. We visited a number of schools he didn’t even wind up applying to and a couple he fell in love with but wasn’t accepted to. There is honestly not much not to love about WashU. The environment is supportive and friendly, the dorms are amazing, the food is great and the campus is beautiful.

Having gone through the process once, we have a new plan with my sophomore daughter. We will only visit schools she is considering applying to ED before she applies (or one’s we happen to be in the area of while traveling). She can apply to as many schools as she wants and once accepted, we will gladly take her to visit all of them.

My son showed almost no interest in WashU yet he was accepted RD and can’t imagine being anywhere else.

Good Luck.

GClawmom,

Thanks for the very helpful post. We will visit to cover all bases. My son is in same boat as yours was. I think he will love this school when he visits and that it would be perfect for a non-pretentious, intellectual kid interested in pre-med. Many years ago I attended a debate camp at Wash U and have ever since thought of it as an under-appreciated educational gem. Nice to see thanks to USNWR and its fabulous med school, WUSTL is starting to get the recognition it has long deserved.

Cchestler,
Visiting and interviewing will help your daughter’s chances. Applying RD is like a lottery. You can look at the decision post from last year. You will see top students that get waitlisted.
If you can afford it financially move your process up and apply ED.

You should show as much interest as you can. There isn’t anything published on what are the most important factors to getting accepted. You can go back over the post from the last several years and there are many comments by accepted students who believe the level of interest is very important.

Her stats and ECs look good. What did she get on AP test?
She should also take at least two SAT Subject Test.
