Parent here trying to figure out chances for DS'14. We plan to visit NEU in March -- on paper it looks like a match and a good fit and a friend visited last year with her DS13 and loved it. I've looked at the common data set but I'm still trying to get a handle on just how selective NEU is/has become since I was in college a hundred years ago.:) My concern is with his GPA...

3.4 UW/4.6-ish W
2270 SAT; 1580 M & CR
226 PSAT so will be NMSF
Full IB diploma plus 5-6 APs
Right now leaning toward Mech Eng major
ECs...few but decent; just became an Eagle Scout
Florida resident
Will need merit aid to make it work for us financially.

Thank you!

Wow you must have had a rigorous schedule with a 1.2 difference in W and UW GPAs

The school district weights honors +1 and AP/IB+2. His school doesn’t rank but does sort students into deciles after 7 semesters using the W GPA. Based on conversations with 2013 parents the school I think DS will be somewhere around top 20%.

I beleive your son has a good chance at Northeatern because his 2270 SAT is about a 35 on the ACT. The 75th percentile of Northeastern is a 29. Also the school takes GPA and rigor as its to 2 most important aspects of an application. 77% percent of Norteastern freshman were in the Top 25% of their class so if what you say about him beiing in the Top 20% then that’s another reason that you son has a good shot. I would just like to mention that Northeastern recommends 4 years of HS math, science, lab, and foreign language.

Thanks egelloc80. Yes he’ll have 4 years of math, lab science, and FL…

No, the mid 50% ACT is 29-32, so the 75th percentile is 32.

If the OP’s student becomes an NMF, it would be full tuition scholarship.

I think your son is definitely a match. Tell him good luck!
