Chances?

GPA: 3.5 UW
ACT: 26
Hardest Course load available
Class Rank: We do it by %, I'm in the top 10%

EC: A lot of different clubs I'm involved in, a couple leadership positions and a couple awards. I'm in NHS, President of a Business club, Vice president of a another club and other random stuff. I should have amazing essays (something just happened to me and my consuelor said it should make a good essay ). I also have 150+ hours of community service. I also did an internship at a law firm ( my intened job, eventually). I want to major in poli-sci/business.

I'm in state and wondering my chances for UVA and William and Marry ED next year. I think my GPA and standardized test scores just go up a notch or two (I'm a junior).

11 views and no responeses? Please?

if you're a minority u definatly have a chance!!! besides i get the vibe they're desperate for more minorities but UVA loves seeing that though u have chance

Ok, What if I'm not a minoirty? lol

Your ACT is low, and everything else is average. Retake the ACT and get something like a 32 (not too hard..), and you'll be competitive.

what is your weighted GPA? Also, I wouldn't recommend applying ED to W&M or UVA unless you are 100% positive by then that that is where you want to go. I don't think there is much of a difference between ED and RD admissions.

I'm 100% sure I want to go to UVA, it's by far my first choice. I'll try the ACT again of course, and try to SAT. I think my essays will be very unique, and I heard that counts for a lot. I just get nervous when I see Ivy-Calliber students applying.

Ok well sounds like a good idea then! I would say just focus on grades for the rest of your junior year. SATs and ACT scores are important but I think it is better to have a high GPA and pretty good scores rather than high scores and an ok GPA (it makes you look like you're slacking). Just keep up the leadership positions and aim for as many As as possible to pull up your GPA.

pssh Southern you don't hav nothing to worry about YOU WILL GET IN besides u fit the criteria of what UVA is actually looking for so don't you even worry even if you aren't a minority

In NoVa and some other areas, nothing is a sure thing at UVA b/c there are so many qualified applicants. SouthernBarn, I think you have a good shot but it is competitive if you are from one of those areas. Just keep up the good work and you've got a great shot : )

Thanks for all the great advice.

Your weighted GPA matters in this case. If you have a 4.0 or above then you can get in ED, otherwise it'll be difficult

I don't have above 4.0 W, I do however have a very strong upward trend in grades and course load. I started off with 1 honors class frosh year bow I'm full IB after I worked over two summers. Will this help me?

Your weighted GPA only matters within the context of your school. If it compares well to the weighted GPAs of your classmates and the other UVA applicants to your school, it will help. If not, it is simply a relative measure, since schools apply weights differently.

Saying your essays will be "unique" doesn't mean much; there will be literally thousands of "good," "unique" and "well-written" essays in the applicant pool. A good essay can help tip the scale for a borderline applicant, but it would take one hell of an essay to compensate for a 26 ACT.

Definitely get your scores up and try to bring your GPA up as well. As it stands, neither is competitive. That's not to say that you're completely out of the running, but your chances aren't looking to good at this point. There's still plenty of time to improve things, but you've gotta get crackin'.

Ignore Nerdyuscgurl; she's being obnoxious.

Contrary to what soccergrl said, UVA can be a sure thing for a small number of applicants, but those applicant are normally instaters who will clearly be getting into more than a few other top 25 universities, including HYP.

If I were you, I'd try to ace my next two semesters; I'd retake the ACT or take the SAT and score 1350+ or 30+; I'd look for some sort of interesting EC to do over the summer; and, finally, I'd work on my essays a lot during the early part of the fall in order to have a strong ED application. Applying ED certainly helps for borderline candidates.

cavalier- I know that UVA is a sure thing for some applicants. Over 1/4 of my senior class ends up at UVA (a lot more get in) and if you have a 3.6+ weighted GPA, you can most likely get in. I know this is not the norm though and at other NoVa schools and other areas of VA, it is very competitive and only a few get in. Based on what this person said, I don't think they are from my school or similar schools so I didn't want to say "it's a sure thing".

Well of course it's not a sure thing for the OP. I was just saying that for some people, it is.

In ED decisions in particular, not for RD necessarily, there is a trend where a cutoff exists with the weighted GPA. Regardless of many other credentials, such as more than above average SATs, many ECs, great essays, etc, there exists a range of numbers that exists up near 4.0 which largely groups the deferred from the accepted, based on what side of that number they are on. UVA does take it into context of your school, but it's still a significant pattern in how UVA does ED .
