Chances?

Hi,

My DD doesn't know I'm doing this, since lurking on CC is my little secret...
Anyone willing to chance her for WashU?

White female from rural, not highly regarded public high school in NH (only 50% of students go to a 4-year college).

GPA: 3.9 unweighted
Class rank: 6/147
SAT (taken once): 2170 (740 math, 690 reading, 740 writing)
She'll be retaking it in October to try to get the reading score up a bit.
SAT II scores were not great - 720 in History and 550 in French
Those will be re-taken in November, but probably not in time for ED

3 AP courses so far, all with scores of 4 (no one in the school got a 5)
Two more AP courses for senior year.
Total AP will be US History, Stats, Macro, English Lit, and Psych.

ECs:

Lacrosse: 3-year varsity, 10th grade Most Improved; 11th grade 2nd team all-state; 12th grade Co-Captain BUT not interested in playing varsity in college.

Women's a capella choir, section leader (alto 2)

All-state Jazz choir, 11th grade (will audition this year as well)

Poetry Out Loud State Finalist, 10th and 11th grade

Summer theatre roles have included leads such as Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast; Cat in the Hat in Seussical, etc.

National Honor Society
Varsity Indoor Track (9th grade only)
Harvard Model UN (10th, 11th, 12th grade)
Other activities, but no leadership roles.

Honors:
National Merit Semifinalist
Attended Advanced Studies Program at St. Paul's School last summer
Clarkson University Book Award (came with $9000 annual scholarship)

She will probably apply ED.

Any ideas for chances? No one from her school has applied to WashU, so Naviance is a total bust for that.

Thanks!

Since we don’t have a varsity lacrosse team, good thing she doesn’t want to play varsity :P

But seriously now, GPA is good. SAT is ok; even 50 points higher would be nice. ECs are ok - by any chance is there some volunteering or work experience (not necessary, obviously, but it does help)? If essays and recs are good, then she has a fair shot.

Pretty good chance. Agrees with Ryan.
Take SAT again to concentrate on reading and at least maintain math and writing. Washu don’t care about writing score but she is okay in that area. I don’t think she needs to retake SAT 2 since its not required. School ECs looks great. Would have been nice for some community ECs. Have her do a great unique essay and good recommendations. Wondering if there has been previous contact by her with Washu like sending a postcard for mailing list, visiting campus, interviewing, or calling admissions to ask whatever since you are inquiring in secret.

Agree with above- WUSTL does not require SAT subject test scores, and If her scores are low, I wouldn’t send them. If she takes the SAT in October and designates WUSTL as a recipient of the scores at the time she takes the test, then it should arrive by November 15.

I am a proud parent of a WUSTL freshman, and I honestly believe that this was the school where my son was meant to be. Most students (and I hope I speak for RyanMK and FLtoWashU) are there because they want to be there and not because of the prestige factor.

Good luck to your daughter, and I’d be happy to answer any other questions from a parent’s perspective.

Looks good to me especially since they don’t have anyone from your school! Applying ED helps a ton with WashU, so I’d definitely do that.
