Chances?

I'm getting conflicting opinions. My cousins who go to UI say I've got a decent shot, but a senior I know at my high school says I've got some work to do. Maybe you guys can help me out.

I go to a pretty top notch public high school.

GPA- 3.7/4
rank: 250ish/800; top 29%
good amount of enriched courses, 1 AP, 2 (maybe 3) after senior year.
Senior courseload is going to be my toughest courseload yet.
If progression counts, in the past three semesters I've gotten a 3.6, 3.85, and 4.15.

ACT: 26 (I'm taking it againg after I finish my class, so this should go up).

EC's:
Marching Band
Jazz
school's top concert band (it's carricular bout we play out-of-school concerts)
Church groups:
service group
Apologetics (discussions about church beliefs)
Retreat leader
Quest

I've also been asked to go to Boys' State. It's an American Legion thing at EIU where I go for a week to learn about government and stuff. It's pretty selective.

Any comments would be much appreciated

Class rank and test score are the two most important factors. UIUC's middle 50% range for those two factors depends on particular college you are applying to. Highest is engineering where the 50% range is usually about top 14% to top 4% and ACT 29-32. Business is somewhat lower than that and Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) lower than business -- LAS 50% range is usually about top 18% to top 5% and ACT 26-30. You're combined class rank/test score is low. You're not completely out of the box but UIUC is definitely a reach. Go here for more info on the usuall ranges for those admitted: http://www.oar.uiuc.edu/future/freshmen/requirements.html

Yeah, it also really depends on what program you apply for. Chances are, at this point, that class rank isn't going to go up too much, so I would really focus on bringing up that ACT to about a 29-30.

I was admitted within a month with a top 26% class rank; however, I'd also taken the most rigorous courseload my school offered (with every AP course, except Art) that wasn't factored in, due to the fact that my school doesn't have a weighting system. With that said, if you think you can pull it off without killing yourself, more AP classes next year is better than less.

I want to go into Communications (advertising specifically) and I know UI doesn't let people apply there until sophmore year. So I'll probably be applying to business school and then transferring.

Thanks for all the help.

For pre-communications you can apply to business (the 2d hardest college to get into) and then attempt to transfer, but most communications majors come out of LAS (somewhat easier to get into) and they take courses recommended by the communications school in freshman year, which are all courses that are in the LAS college. Also, you are in a wait and see time. Starting in fall, the communications college will start taking 2d year students, previously it only took those starting 3d year, and the intent is to eventually take new freshman. However, that may not happen until 2008 or after.

yeah, you are just going to make it more difficult for yourself if you try business. Go LAS...or if you want to be even safer than that, apply ACES and then transfer to LAS after like a semester. Business would reduce anyone's chances considerably.

business is not easy to get into. i have a 32 act, 3.9 gpa (w) and ranked 89 out of 800.
I didn't get in because they ran out of space (or because I was Chinese :() )Just apply for LAS and do econ or something like I'm going to do. also just b/c u took an ACT doesn't mean your score is going to improve dramtically. after i took an act class, all I got was a 28. I bought the actual ACT practice book and ended up getting a 32 six months later. It all depends if you practice real hard and know the basics.

Your Ec's are real good though and would make you more desirable than another student w/ similar credentials but fewer EC's.

thank you guys for all your help. I was wondering what to do if I wanted to transfer. I though business would be good because it's closest to advertising but that's obviously not the case.

Yeah do LAS you should get in. Or even Ag. It doesn't matter what you apply to. If you want to go just apply to get in.
