Chances?

I'm a rising senior and going to apply SCEA no matter what, I just want some opinions.

I've liked Princeton since I was little but really fell in love with it as soon as I visited last summer (summer before junior year) and I hope to study chemical engineering and maybe minor in music performance.

-SAT 2350 (800 M, 750 R, 800 W)

-SAT II 800 chemistry, 800 biology m, 800 math ii

-GPA: 4.00 UW, 4.69 W (highest ever achieved at my school)

-Rank: 1/198 at top 50 public magnet, tied w/2 other people for valedictorian

-AP scores: Fives on all tests. Statistics, World History (sophomore year), Biology, Chemistry, Cal BC/AB subscore, English Lang, US History (junior year), Human Geography (junior year self-study)

-Planned senior year courses: AP Macroeconomics/Gov, AP Computer Science, AP English Lit, AP Physics 2, AP Psychology, AP Env Sci, school-mandated magnet course

-ECs:
+Violin: All-State orchestra 3 years, top 20 in state sophomore year, first person from my school to make All-State orchestra ever (school is very unsupportive of music, no school orchestra)
+Violin: All-Region top orchestra 3 years, assistant concertmaster freshman year
+Violin: 2nd place Beta Club statewide competition
+Violin: Associate concertmaster for youth orchestra's appearance on national radio

+Violin: Invited to & performed in a chamber music festival on a merit scholarship
+Violin: Rating 1 at UIL region/state solo & ensemble freshman/sophomore years
+2nd place in HOSA state this year
+1st place in HOSA area this year
+2nd place in HOSA area last year (different event)
+Welch Summer Scholars research program
+~300 volunteer hours, mostly at local food bank/hospital
+NHS member
+MUN president (I don't really count this, it was kind of a joke at my school)
+Assistant historian of local beta club chapter
+Tutored disadvantaged kids, got paid minimum wage

I'm applying as a prospective BSE major and writing that extra essay.

I'm submitting a violin recording as my art supplement.

I'm an Asian middle-class girl, so we'll see.

Hi there! You definitely are fine in regards to your stats and your EC’s look fine. I wouldn’t say that you have limited ECs, and a lack of national awards in ok. Especially since you’re applying SCEA, I’d say that you have a pretty solid chance on getting in. Hopefully both of us can get into Princeton this year - best of luck to you!

Getting into Princeton without giant national awards is never a guarantee, but your application looks solid even for the higher hoop that Asians have to jump through. The girl I dated this summer is an Asian and Princeton/Stanford/Yale cross admit whose application seems to have been similar in strength to yours, from what I know.

I’d give you really good chances (and if I thought you weren’t qualified I would tell you). But understand that Princeton rejects 80% of applicants who have SAT scores in the 2300-2400 range. Your service and all-around high academic standing gives you a big edge, but stay frosty. I heard that Princeton was the dream school of the valedictorian of the best public school in my state, but she was rejected and will be attending Yale. Conversely, I have a sophomore friend at Princeton who was rejected from Yale. There’s no sidestepping the randomness in the admissions gauntlet.

Since Princeton is your dream school, I really hope you get in. If you’re deferred SCEA, go on and apply to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, etc. You’re definitely qualified for the highest tier of universities, and I have faith that you’ll get into one of them.
