UMass Amherst is my dream school, and if I didn't get in I would be heartbroken. I have a

2.9 GPA
560 Math SAT
530 Reading SAT

and am expecting to hear back on my ACT very soon. I'm in the school play, was on the varsity baseball team all four years, have over a thousand hours of community service, and am in the Best Buddies International program at my school. My letters of recommendation would come from the mayor of my town and the principal of my school. The only thing I have going for me GPA-wise is that it's increased every year. I have taken mostly AP and scholars courses my entire high school career. So, what are my chances?

What are you interested in majoring in? If engineering or business, I would say you would have a better shot if you can get your gpa and scores higher, as they are very competitive at UMass.

All I can tell you is our experience with my son 2 yrs ago. He applied to Engineering with a 3.3 gpa, 1380 SAT (M720 CR 660), His major ECs were part time job and and Eagle Scout (with all the volunteering, community service and camping, etc. that is involved with Scouting and doing his Eagle Service project).

He was admitted to UMass as an “Undecided” instead of directly to the Engineering program. He is now a sophomore at UCONN, where he was admitted to the School of Engineerig and was his top chocie anyway.

Like confusedmominma I can only tell you my sons experience. He applied early last fall with a 3.3 weighted gpa and a 1950 on the SAT (reading 660 math 630) and he was deferred to the regular pool. He had a number of awards and EC’s and excellent recs. He also wanted sports management. He got in but as an undecided major. He is attending and will apply to the program this spring for next fall. Good luck. BTW, he loves UMass and is happy that he made the decision to attend despite not being admitted directly to the program.

Your GPA is very low. ACT is in their avarage. Umass looks first at GPA and after at your scores. Did you received your repord card from this senior semester? You need min 3.3 overall. Good luck.

Once you raise your GPA, I think you would definitely be a high contender on getting in! It’s also really good that it’s been increasing every year, along with how many volunteer hours you have!
