Chances?

Hey! I'm a senior from NJ looking to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. What do you think of my chances?

GPA: 3.5375 Unweighted 4.9551 Weighted on a scale of 6.0

SAT: 630 Reading, 660 Math, 630 Writing

ACT: 30

Class Rank: 125 of 472 (top 30%) Unweighted, 97 out of 472 Weighted (top 25%)

EC:

Trumpet 8 Years
Marching Band (9-12)
Jazz Band (9-12)
Pep Band (9-12)
Latin Club (9-12)
Asian Club (9)
Robotics (12)
Certamen (10-11) (Latin knowledge bowl)

I have volunteer hours at the library and I am a member of NHS.

My current schedule and first marking period grades respectively are:

AP Lit and Comp (B)
AP Latin Vergil (B)
AP Physics C (C)
AP Calculus (A)
Honors World Cultures (just a social studies elective) (B)
Wind Ensemble (A)

(AP is weighted of course)
I'm most afraid of how my physics grade will reflect when they see a potential engineering student. I have a very strong A in calculus, but my jump from level 2 physics AB to the AP Physics C was a very tough one. Right now I'm holding a high B in the class and my teacher would be able to write a letter of rec talking about how I improved (he has done this before for other students) by the regular decision deadline in January.

My current letters of rec are from my AP English teacher from Junior year (I have a very strong relationship with him), and my Marching Band director.

That is another thing, I should have taken advantage of the early action deadline but I did not and I still regret it.

So CC, what are my chances?

Even with your grade in Physics, I think you have a very solid chance. Your SAT and ACT scores are within range and you have excellent ECs. The fact that your C is in AP Physics is not nearly the negative it would’ve been if it was in a standard humanities course. Plus, your strong showing in AP Calculus helps to mitigate it. I don’t think you are a ‘shoe in’, but you have a good chance of getting in.
