Hi, I am a rising senior from New Jersey and am interested in Clemson!
GPA: 3.7/4.0
ACT: 29 (will hopefully go up to 31+ after my next test)
Rank: 40/350 (11.4%)
2 Varsity Sports
Part-time job (20+ hrs/wk)
NHS
Various leadership positions within school
Volunteer experiences with many different organizations
I’m hoping I can rely on getting into Clemson if my early decision(Richmond) doesn’t work out, so I want to see if I have a high chance of getting in.
Thanks!
Clemson looks for 3 criteria over everything else – GPA, class rank and SAT/ACT (they do superscore).
I have not seen new data for accepted students entering Fall 2015, but saw on the Clemson website comments from the President saying last year set a record for number of applications and the accepted students last year had the highest stats ever. I think breaking into UNSWR top 20 boosted the applications.
I think you stand a good handle of getting accepted, but to get an OOS merit scholarship, you will need to get be top 10 percent class rank and 30 ACT, and show rigor on your transcript.
A good reality check is to search on CC for “Clemson waitlist” and you will see how tough of a year it was. There were several posts from students citing high stats who were waitlisted.
Good luck to you! It’s a great school!
Clemson superscores the SAT, but not the ACT according to the admissions representative we spoke with . We went to Discover Clemson day in May and were told that over 13,000 people applied and approximately 3500 were admitted. I received quite a bit of info at that meeting. If you have any other specific questions , let me know , I may be able to
help answer them.
Wrong thread? @carolinamom2boys Also, I don’t believe that Clemson’s acceptance rate is now 26% (3500/13000). Maybe 3500 of them ended up attending the school?
@mmead01 at Discover Clemson Day in May which was held at Clemson we were told that last year was a record year for applications and that was the number of applications received and students accepted. Over the past several years Clemson has become more competitive to get into, for instate as well as OOS applicants. Also, were you asking me if I posted on the wrong thread? You stated in your post that you were hoping that you could rely on getting into Clemson if your ED to Richmond doesn’t work out. I’m sorry if I misunderstood what information you were asking for.
We’re just back from orientation last week where attendees were informed that there are 3500 incoming freshman in the Class of 2019 at Clemson.
@carolinamom2boys Yeah it just seemed like you were answering a question about superscoring when I never stated anything about that. I understand what you mean now and I have also realized that Clemson is nowhere near a sure thing for me as an OOS student and I would be lucky to get in.
One of the other posters mentioned super scoring the SAT and ACT in their post , that’s why I mentioned it and just wanted to let you know what they told us when I went to Discover Clemson day so you’d have some information to help you. It’s getting very competitive for instate too recently . If you can get your ACT/SAT scores up a little they do offer fairly good merit scholarships but you have to apply by Dec to be eligible and I don’t know that how that comes into play with ED to Richmond. I’m assuming that their ED is binding and prevents you from applying to other schools EA. It’s hard to know , each school is different.
Clarification on my post #1 – @carolinamom2boys is right – they don’t superscore ACT in the sense of combining individual section subscores from multiple tests, but if OP takes ACT and gets the 31 he hopes to get they will update his application with the 31 replacing the 29 he has now. Or they’d just count the SAT score instead if that was more favorable.
Re the admission numbers for this year, Clemson’s website had a story on May 7 citing Pres. Clements’ speech to faculty: “This year we also set a new record for the number of undergraduate applications. We had almost 22,500 applications for 3,200 slots in the fall freshman class and the academic profile of those applicants is at an all time high.” Sorry I don’t know how to link the article to this posting but the name of the article is “Clements lauds Clemson’s success at year-end meeting” and you could search the media report index.
I’m guessing they subsequently decided to bump up the 3,200 target to 3,500 and that of the near 22,500 who applied, 13,000 were accepted and ultimately 3,500 committed to attend for Fall 2015.
@ PeachyInVa Thanks for the info. I’m not sure why the surge in applications for Clemson. I’ve heard that many OOS students are now using Clemson as a safety school possibly explaining the increase. Another possibility is SC offers renewable scholarships to instate students that achieve certain SAT and GPAs so many students are deciding to remain instate. I can remember our GC telling us at the beginning of the year that there was probably going to be quite a few disappointed students who just assumed they’d be accepted at Clemson. At the time, I thought she may be overstating , but based on your info and the info we received in May , she sounds like she was right on target.
@carolinamom2boys yeah, I am applying Aug 1st to Clemson as of now. I am no longer applying ED to Richmond due to the fact that it is probably not worth the price tag. Do you have any idea when I would hear back if I applied in August?
I’m not sure. But you can apply to several schools as long as they’re not binding. That’s what my son is going to do. What do you want to major in? I’ve read a lot about University of Alabama and they give a lot of different levels of merit scholarships,
Last year DD received her acceptance letter with preliminary OOS merit scholarship info in early October after applying in August.
I think they know students are likely also applying ED elsewhere and so they want you to know their decision in a timely way.
@carolinamom2boys gives good advice about applying to University of Alabama. Every student with good stats should apply. It is oh so nice to have that as a solid option in your pocket as you make that final decision in April. Our family had other reasons why Clemson fit DD’s needs better, but UA is a wonderful opportunity.
@carolinamom2boys I plan on majoring in accounting, but my mom forbids me from going to Alabama. I’ve mentioned it as a safety to my parents. My dad really likes it, but my mother would just never allow it.
@PeachyInVA What is your daughter 's major? My son is a rising senior and was offered provisional acceptance at Clemson for fall 2016 after they received his ACT scores. It’s good to know the decision that quickly. My son is getting his application ready to go August 1. Did your daughter apply to Calhoun Honors?
If you’re looking at accounting, have you considered University of SC Columbia ? They have a very good business program and fairly well known Honors College . They also give good merit to OOS students . What size school do you want?
@carolinamom2boys I have considered USC, but it doesn’t seem like a great option as I hate big schools. I live in New Jersey so it doesn’t seem reasonable for how little I like it. A small school is what I want, but that normally comes with a fairly expensive tuition. Bucknell and URich were both absolutely perfect in every single way, but I’m just looking for options in case I don’t want to pay for that much and if I don’t get in.
Clemson is a fairly big school , just FYI. Keep doing your research , I’m sure you’ll
find the right fit.
