AH! Not another "chances" thread! Oh well, here we go, Vassar's my top choice, and I'm definitely going to be appying there ED.

Race/Gender: White Male
GPA: 4.2~ weighted, 3.8~ unweighted
Class Rank: 47/227 (the only thing I'm super worried about. My school is an urban magnet and about 200 kids get accepted each year out of a pool of about 600. Not as selective as colleges, obviously, but yeah... you get the point)
SATs/etc: I had a 2050 on the PSATs--R: 630, M: 640, W: 780. I plan to get well over a 700 on all the sections of the actual SAT, things have definitely changed since I took the PSATs. I'm taking the Math2, US History, and Lit SAT2s, I predict over a 700 on those too. As for AP tests, I have 5s on World History and Language, and hopefully 4s or 5s on Lit and US History this year.
Classes: I actually was able to skip an entire year of Language Arts. I had 2 APs my sophomore year and 3 my junior. All my other classes were honors, none lower. Next year, I have 6 AP classes and 3 classes per semester at a local university.

Also, I teach myself music theory and the guitar. I draw and I've carried a part time job since my sophomore year. I also do a ton of community service.

So, what do you think? I think the whole guy thing helps me out a lot. That and my SAT scores. My class rank is a little abysmal, but when viewed concurrently with my GPA, it's sort of explained. Plus, I think my course load next year works in my favor. It's completely weighted, so it'll help out my class rank. Thanks in advance!

"I plan to get well over a 700 on all the sections of the actual SAT"

right.

Hm... Yeah, you're right. I'm totally just making that up. It's not like I've been studying my butt off for the last few months, taking classes, and taking tons of practice test where I consistantly perform at that level. I'm totally just trying to impress you guys, really. That's exactly right. Thank you so much for your valuable post.

Actually, that was mean, I apologize. I sat in front of the screen for a few minutes after I posted that and then felt like a jerk. Not to sound pretentious or anything, but that's what I'm shooting for. That's what I honesly feel that I'll get. That's how I've been performing. And honestly, that's how I'd like to be evaluated--given the best case scenario. Like I said, I apologize for my hostility, but saying "right" as if you actually were familiar with how I performed was somewhat innappropriate, and frankly, I didn't appreciate it. Your opinion does matter to me, though, contrary to what I previously posted--that's why I started this topic for myself. I'd just like to quickly digest that information and tell me how you feel about my chances. Thanks.

One thing to remember is you can never expect anything; SAT scores, good reactions, and a college acceptance.

That being said, I think you have a fairly strong chance because of your GPA and extracurricular activities.

yes, i realize your preparation for the sat gives you the notion that you should get 700+ on all the sections, but it's just the fact that you said you "plan" to do so. thats everyone's plan, man. its pointless for us to evaluate your chances going by your "plans".

regardless, i got into vassar with a 2040 and a similar rank. write genius essays.

Jason, hope you don't mind if I hikack your thread, but I'd rather not crowd the forum with "chances" threads.

I'm something of an enigma for this application process. I should get fantastic teacher recommendations. I spend hours a week tutoring students with learning disabilities. I ran a couple of years of JV Track. I was just accepted to Boys State. I have a 2350 SAT. (750-V) I hold an elected position on Student Government. I went through a leadership training program at a camp for 2 years, and am going down to Georgetown to take a couple of classes this summer. I'm taking AP US History, AP European History and AP Language and Composition this year. I also have completed SUPA Sociology, and next year will take SUPA Psychology, AP Lit, AP Gov and Pol, SUPA Forensic Science and Hon Calculas. I will write a killer admissions essay, and I interview extremely well.

The catch is that I have an 85 unweighted average. (We're not on the 4.0 scale.) Vassar is one of my top choices. I'm a male too, but I don't know if that matters. Any type of an appraisal would be much appreciated.

Well, I'm not an uber-aquainted with the whole admissions process, but it definitely seems as though you have plenty of academic ambition and that you've been constantly trying to improve yourself, despite your lackluster GPA. And frankly, I'm not sure how much the whole gender-issue plays into it. If anyone has any insight into that--I'd appreciate it, and I'm sure others would too. Thanks!
