Chances

Hi ,I am currently a Junior from Michigan. UNC is my dream school, but I’m very uncertain because OOS admissions are so hard

ACT Composite: 34
English: 35 Math:35 Reading:32 Science:34 Writing: 23
I took Chem and Math II SAT II tests, but I don’t think I did too well (maybe a 700)

GPA: 3.95 (unweighted)

Course load: Pretty hard. Honors advanced math. Honors Pre-calc this year, BC Calc next year
Heavy science course load; AP Chem, AP bio, Anatomy, physics, vertebrates. AP Government and AP micro Econ. 3 years of German. The rest are pretty standard stuff. (These classes include my senior year classes too)

AP tests:
Expecting 4/5 on chem and gov. Only tests I took this far

Extra curriculars:
Sports: Co-captain of JV lacrosse
Jobs: I work 25 hours a week this summer, and I worked 15 hours a week last summer
National Chemistry Olympiad
NHS member junior year. NHS Officer my senior year
Volunteer 4+ hours a week at a hospital
I will shadow heart and orthopedic surgeries this summer

Teacher and councilor reps will be very good. I’ve talked to my councilor many times about UNC and she’s contacted UNC admissions directors. I will also be visiting UNC and meeting with an admissions councilor

My essays will be pretty good, my brother committed suicide while I was in high school and it’s changed my view a lot on how I live and how I view mental health.

I’m white male, upper-middle class. No hooks

You are certainly in the range, but OOS is unpredictable. Focus on your essays and keep up with your EC’s and hopefully you will make it! UNC has a YouTube video on essays.

@twogirls ok thanks, I’ll check that out.

As @twogirls mentions, your essays will be very important; work on them over the summer, and don’t wait until the last minute to get them done.

If your weighted GPA is 4.5+, then with your 34 ACT you should be competitive for admission as an unhooked OOS student, assuming that your essays are good. (Did you really have a 23 on the ACT writing section? I hope that you meant 32.)

Be sure to apply Early Action; and remember that UNC has a relatively early EA deadline of October 15.

@gandalf78 thanks for the advice, and that was my last writing score. I have not gotten my new writing score but I don’t know how good it will be

I missed that 23 writing score-I am not so sure how much attention they will pay to that. They may just focus on the composite. Spend the summer focusing on your common app essays as well as the UNC essays- they will be important.

I think that UNC superscores the ACT, http://blog.prepscholar.com/colleges-that-superscore-act-complete-list, so hopefully you did better on the writing section the last time that you took the ACT. But yes, work on those essays this summer!

Good luck.
