17 years old, male from NJ, HS Senior, etc.
I’m applying to USNA, Columbia University, UPenn, WPI, Northeastern, UMass Amherst, UBC Vancouver, and UConn. I want to get an engineering degree, in robotics or systems.
I attended a technical high school for my freshman and sophomore year for engineering, but transferred to my current school for my junior and now senior year.
ECs: Marching Band (drumline captain for one year), FIRST Robotics (three years Drive team captain, two years Mechanical team captain), two years of NJ Math League, two years of Technology Student Association.
Oh and 5 APs, AP Physics II E&M (4) AP Physics Calc based(5) AP Chem (currently taking) AP US Gov (currently taking), AP Calc AB (currently taking)
Uh. CR of 103/412 is not great, even for a competitive high school. How is your UW GPA 4.0 then?
But I think you should get into WPI. And likely get a scholarship. And practice a lot before retaking the SAT. It’s a rubbish test, but it’s fairly important. Historically, WPI has been great at Robotics. We are still good, but I’d say not so great from the CS side. We lost key professors (Chernova, Berensen, Padir) to other universities.
Sorry W GPA of 4.0, my school doesn’t calculate UW and I was unaware of that. What dragged my CR down was the weighting system at my technical HS was drastically different than the system currently being used, and that threw me off quite a bit. It should rise this year.
Too close, I don’t want to go particularly close to home. And I’m retaking the SATs tomorrow after completing quite a few books so hopefully i do significantly better.
WPI is a great school. I think you have a good shot, but it is still a slight reach (your AP scores are great and might raise your chances). It’s worth applying, but I’m not sure how to predict your overall chances.
Your GPA is strong, and grades are a better predictor of success in college than SAT scores. WPI knows this so I think you have a very good chance. Good luck!
@hopeyhippie 4.0 WGPA is not particularly high. The reason SATs are used is to because of rampant grade inflation in high schools. I still think OP has a reasonable chance.
OP indicated 4.0 UW; I didn’t see the later change to 4.0 WGPA. That being said, the average GPA per WPI’s common data set is only a 3.8. So we agree that OP has a decent chance of admission.
