hey. i know alot of people have asked other's opinions of their chances, so i'm just adding one to the bunch. i want to apply to cornell, but i don't know whether to apply early to AAP or A/S. what are my chances for either?

stats~
GPA - 90/91 (no gpa)
I'm in a superduperduper competitive hs in the heart of nyc-- there are about 800 students in the graduating class. and about 80 get into cornell each year. 10-15 to harvard. just to give you a feel of things.
No ap classes this year, but taking the apUSH test. ap chinese, ap ab calc, ap eng great books and maybe ap gov for senior year.
sats total - 2140, 760 math, 670 verbal, 690 writing. total m+v = 1430
bio Sat2s - 620// us history and math in june (aiming around 700)
rank- no rank at my school.
some school activities- school paper editor// chinese students association// national honor society// toybox children's charity club
out of school- state precollege prep program at columbia university since freshman year, museum of chinese in the americas museum assistant, various museums' volunteer, tribeca film fest volunteer, Museum of modern art book making class, breakthrough alum and volunteer, former library volunteer, and more that i can't think of right now.

this summer, i will either intern at the Museum of Modern Art, or take college courses at CUNY Baruch.

1.) 80 people from 1 HS goping to Cornell...is that a joke?

2.) SAT-2's are low. Since you have time, you could consider redoing SAT-1 too just to be safe. Decent ecs.

3.) Take some real hard courses in senior year, ace them, work up ur SAT scores and you have great shot.

4.) Stat comparison can be misleading:
A recruited athlete could get in with a 1800, but you won't. Just because I had 800s in all my SAT-2s doesn't mean you too have to have them. I had not much non-academic activities apart from quizzing. Just capitalize on your strong points and u'll do real well.

I'd work up your SATs. Everything else looks good, especially considering you're coming from a super competitive school.
But CAS might be hard with those SATs. What do you want to study?

You do seemed very committed to the museum and chinese thing, which is great because it shows that u stick with your passions and such. I'd say u have pretty good stats...and wow about that high school and the 80 people!
ACE THOSE APS!!! This is the first year I took APs (lol my school is tiny and only offers one ap sophomore year and the rest senior year). I aced them all and that looked great.

from this paragraph alone: "I'm in a superduperduper competitive hs in the heart of nyc-- there are about 800 students in the graduating class. and about 80 get into cornell each year. 10-15 to harvard. just to give you a feel of things."

ny + irregularly high amount of students going to ivies. well, that, and i dont know of any other schools in ny that send so many students to ivies besides stuy :P

visit and express interest, since you don't live too far away. get yourself an on-campus interview (are those even available? i'm from california, so i wasn't in the same boat as you), learn about the programs so that you can really convey your passion for getting into cornell. if you really are passionate, apply ED; your chances ED aren't bad at all. with over 20,000 apps, interest and passion do make a difference

ealier, arjun mentioned the perfect 800s he received for the satIIs (congrats btw) but having something short of perfect shouldnt stop you from applying to CAS. i was admitted into CAS with (by cornell's standards) "mediocre" scores...for a little visual, i got a 730 on Math II, 740 on chem. and 750 on US history. I took others but most were around the mid-700s..some were above and others were below. but i wholeheartledy agree with arjun...truly capitalize on what you love. despite what ever anyone may tell me, i will forever remain convinced that your SAT scores will only put you in the pile of applicats for consideration....aka "the pool" and after that, unless you match some other person freakishly perfectly in every other aspect, your scores prolly wont be looked at for much else. really, just write something about yourself and express why you feel that cornell is deserving of you (notice that i didnt say "express why you feel that you are deserving of cornell")

which school would increase my chances of getting into the school? i really really love cornell and i've visited twice already. i want to apply to either AAP or CAS. i really like architecture but i wouldn't mind majoring in english. My portfolio probably needs work too and i'm kind of leaning towards architecture, BUT the architecture school only accepts a couple hundred (if that) and the chances are slim. infact i really want to apply to architecture but i want to apply to the school that will give me the greater chance to get into cornell. i know it sounds like i just want the cornell name, but it really isn't like that. i really really really like cornell, and the fact that it hosts an architecture program is a plus because i never even considered architecture until i visited.

but gotta work that avg up. from what i hear, about 1/4 of stuyvesant has 95 avg. check the website, someone posted the stats before. i think your stats are slightly below borderline.

harvardman, where did you hear than from?
in the 06senior class, a 91 qualified as a top 10% of the class. granted there are alot of superduper overachieving students but there are also some mediocre students.

i'm really set on applying ed to cornell so is there anything i can do to boost my chances? i mean, what characteristics, ecs, stats, etc does Cornell value?

To tell u the truth, for u to find a site and beg for ways to get into this school that u love and you say is perfect for u...shows enough. If you can truly express this passion in the things you do and the essays u write to them then it should be enough. And if its not enough try even harder. It seems like you are the type of person who will make it. Don't make Cornell your goal that if you don't reach you will be devastated though. If they don't take you it's their loss...but do whatever the hell you can to make them! lol
