I think senior grades will help me but What can I do to help my chances besides sending a letter to admissions office?

please give suggestions for getting in from deferral list and asses chances of other schools. thanks

It seems there are tons of "chances" threads around but the people best able to answer that is your own guidance department at your school. They should have compiled statistics for every college that previous students have applied to, their stats, and whether they were accepted or denied. This way you can build your list of reaches, matches, and safeties.

Also, you can do your own homework, such as at:

<a href="http://education.yahoo.com/college/%5B/url%5D">http://education.yahoo.com/college/</a></p>

or guide books at your bookstore, such as Fiske, Kaplan, and Princeton Review.

If your stats are within the %'s listed, chances are good. If they are above and you met all the deadlines, chances should be good for merit money too (at schools that give it; Syracuse does).

As for Syracuse, some programs can be more selective (such as Newhouse) and some will depend heavily on an audition or portfolio. (You do not state the program you are applying to.)

first choice was dual arts+sciences and commubnications. 2nd was comunications, 3rd was arts. really no preference. i dont think im getting in communications but id be happy with arts sciences.

Anything is possible NJDevs12, I just got in ( and made the Dean's scholar list) and I didn't even think I'd have a chance. I applied early admission to this college and THIS was pretty much the whole of my resume:

Academics:1160 SAT (1150 second time), AP English, AP History, NHS, 4.0 GPA (according to my guidance counselor, but that was only what she thought, cuz she didn't want to take the time to actually figure it out), and I'm 12/125 in my class, Graduating Year Early.....

Activities and Sports: Bookstore (2 yrs), Spanish Club (1 yr), Band (since 4th grade- but i didn't put that on my resume i don't think...maybe i did), Cheerleading (2 yrs)....

Jobs: newspaper carrier (almost 2 yrs- feb. of 6th to summer before 8th), and babysitting (the job that never ends no matter how old you get)

I got in for international relations, and I have to get approved to double major in a foreign language.....also I mentioned that I'm planning on joining ROTC (in final selection, just have to pass the PAE, med-exam and interview- easy)......also, I waited until the week my application was due to finally decide I wanted to apply there, and it was sent out on the final day it had to be postmarked.....(my essays were done at 5 in the morning of the day i mailed it out)..........

I am the best example of what NOT to do, and I still got in, so I'm pretty sure that you have a chance.

That's good to hear bomberscheer!

I applied RD with higher stats and I'm really hoping to get some scholarships! Is this your first choice or no?

It was my first choice....I just have to figure out if i can go there.....i have my interview tomorrow for rotc and that's the deciding factor of whether or not i'll be able to go because my tuition will be taken care of (i could take out a lot of loans from financial aide, but i don't know if i really want to do that...i probably will though)......i'm pretty sure i'll go though, b/c my registration and housing fee is due by Feb 1st and the next app deadline for one of the other colleges i was thinking of is Jan 15th and i don't get notified until march, so basically it boils down to the return of our fafsa results, whether or not i get into rotc, and if i get any scholarships and such.....i really want to go there, but it's an expensive school to pay for, especially when i am paying for it pretty much on my own.....lol, i have about 21,000 more to raise just to go there for 1 yr....but i figure it this way, if i don't get into rotc than when i turn 18 i'm joining the reserves and i can always apply to rotc again next year and just have to pay for one year and they'll cover the rest of my years there......i dunno.....

if you had higher stats though you might be eligible for some of the bigger scholarships they offer, i know the chancellors was 8,000 and there was another one that was a few thousand more....i only got the dean's one though which is 6,000....but it still went a long way though in funding my hope, hope future education there

B

can u specify what u mean by higher stats for full scholarships? (specific SAT and GPA)

Any scores and ec's remotely similar to Njdev is probably going to get you in. I subscribe to its Syracuse Challenge program, and the admission is guaranteed if you have above an 1100 on SAT and above an 85 ave. And there's a good chance, I'll be thoroughly funded. ;)
It would have been a good choice of schools to go to, if it wasn't for the proximity to home.

There's also a Syracuse University Founders Scholarship that my daughter (just finished her first semester) received based on her admissions application. It gives $12,000/year. It is the highest amount awarded of the three (Deans, etc.) scholarship awards. What was nice was that she didn't have to fill out any separate applications.

She had also applied to BU, but they only offered $10,000 scholarship.

Ok, you want some real data to figure out your "chances" at any given college? Here's some real data (from Ithaca HS):

<a href="http://www.icsd.k12.ny.us/highschool/studserv/CollegeProfile2004.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.icsd.k12.ny.us/highschool/studserv/CollegeProfile2004.pdf</a></p>

I'm surprised they're making this information public, as our HS would not let you take their book out of the room or make copies.

So, what you have to consider is how your HS compares to Ithaca HS. But the SAT test scores should give a pretty good baseline. And of course many other factors go into this - such as essays, legacy, recommendations, URM, auditions/portfolio's, etc. But this is still better to go by than some HS kid on CC giving you an opinion. ;-)

Also, this won't reveal how/where merit aid is offered.

Looking at this and my own HS's data, it seems to me the HS GPA is generally the most important "cut-off" factor for most colleges.

I would have to disagree with you on GPA being the most important factor. First of all UVA's average GPA is a 4.0 but i was accepted with a 3.4. You might think thats low, but u need to consider so many factors that go into GPA, including Scale A=94-100 or 90-100, wighted or unwighted, CLASS DIFICULTLY(talking full APs or taking easy A electives). I think Universities get a clear image of your TURE GPA, when they put it next to SATs, 1 or 2's, and other important factors. Because if you get a 3.4 and a 1400 on your SATs you know that your GPA is completly under inflated.
