Hi, I’m a high school senior planning on applying to McGill and I seem to be abov the minimum requirements for nearly everything except the GPA, so I was wondering what my chances were of getting in.
W GPA: 4.2
UW GPA: 3.52 (this is what I’m most worried about, since my worst grades were in junior year - I got 2 Cs in AP Chem and Pre-Calc; based on what I’d calculated, that would make my GPA for 10th and 11th grades 3.36, but I can however get straight As this year, at least for the mid semester grades)
SAT: 1570
SAT Subject Tests: 750 in English Literature, 740 in US History
APs: 5 in English Language and Composition, 4s in APUSH and AP Art History, 3 in AP Chemistry
I’m taking 6 other APs this year.
Thanks in advance!
Oh, by the way, I’m probably going to be applying for the Favulty of Arts.
For Arts the minimum is B+ which is a 3.3. McGill looks at unweighted GPA only.
They may request you to send in first semester grades before making a decision.
When calculating your GPA make sure you are calculating it based only on academic grades. They take out PE/Health/Arts grades when calculating your academic GPA. My S19 is in the same boat as you…he was the king of B+ grades this year…missing A- in three of his classes by just just a point or two.
I would not consider McGill to be safe for you at all. Unfortunately for you, your GPA with freshman year omitted is the most important thing for admissions there.
@TomSrOfBoston Thank you for the info! It helped ease my worries.
@SwimmingDad Yes, I kept that in mind when calculating the GPA - it was always the math and science courses that I’d get Bs in and I suppose I was taking on too much with AP Chem.
@DadTwoGirls Yes, I understand, I thought so too, but I checked my school’s Naviance and it showed that my GPA was only about .05 points lower than the average of those who got in from my school, while my SAT was quite a bit higher than the average, I think by around 50 points, which was why I decided to post a chances thread. I do however, go to one of the top non-magnet public schools in my state, and among the country as well (usually ranked w/in the top 5 of the state), so that may be why the average GPA is slightly lower for accepted students from my school. I’m not sure though. Thanks for your reply!
