i must say that your ecs are spectactular... theyre exactly what a bucknell adcom would like to see. with good essays and recommendations, they may very well give you a better chance at some of your 'reaches' than youd otherwise think.

the bad news is that the business program at bucknell has the lowest acceptance rate at the university, 23.2% for the class of 2010.

as you probably know, great first semester grades and a 1300+ sat score will help your application significantly. i dont have numbers for bucknell, but lehigh, which is similar in selectivity, admits 58% of applicants scoring in the 1300s and only 32% scoring in the 1200s. id bet a decent number of those in the 1200s were 'hooked' applicants, too. granted, i dont know if bucknell has such a dramatic cutoff, but its a startling statistic nonetheless.

as for recommendations, its in your best interest to create a list given your current score. as such, i would definitely consider adding lehigh and richmond if you like bucknell. elon, denison and muhlenberg also come to mind for more 'matchy' kinds of schools with a similar environment. susquehanna and juniata are two smaller lacs in pennsylvania with business programs, as well. (susquehanna is 15 minutes down the road from bucknell, by the way.)

good luck with your senior year and the rest of your college search. if you have any further questions, feel free to ask. and ray bucknell!

wow thank you so much for ur reply, it is very informative...one question is this: is it possible to apply to a less selective school at bucknell, and then transfer into the business school if i get good grades? ive seen this as a possibility at other schools, and was wondering if it could be done at bucknell. also, do u think i should apply early decision?

the answer to your first question is that it is indeed possible. the business program is actually within the college of liberal arts at bucknell, but a short application (one page, i dont remember if theres even a back) is required to get into the programs. a decent number of students are accepted, but as youd expect decisions are largely made based on a students grades. get good grades and youre probably in. but you should definitely consider the possibility that you dont.

applying ed will increase your chances. however, its something i advise people to use only when they have absolute number one choices and are in financial positions to accept their universities financial aid offers. the first half of the question is something you have to decide for yourself. if youre SURE you want to go to bucknell, go for it. if youre just trying to increase your chances, dont. the second half is a bit easier since bucknell does guarantee to meet 100% of your demonstrated need, but if there are questions nonetheless about finances, ed is probably not in your best interest.

Elon has a beautiful new building for its business school that will be opening next month. You should check their website. My daughter goes to Elon and loves it there.

I too would like to know my chances of getting into bucknell. ok, so my stats aren't that impressive:
GPA: (this is weighted) 3.8
SATs: 1980 (i plan to retake the SATs in october)
ECs: high school lacrosse team for four years, piano for eight years, brief stints in the usual high school clubs (various community service, california scholarship federation, and the like), a volunteer at the sutter davis hospital, a staff writer on my high school newspaper
i don't know.. the more i type, the more unsure I am of my qualifications.
but here's to taking chances.
any input would be highly appreciated! gracias :)

it would help if you posted your unweighted gpa as well as your math/reading sat subscores.

assuming a normal weighting system, the good news is that you will be a competitive applicant. however, the bad news is that bucknell appears to have increased its emphasis on high school grades for each of the past several classes (probably not the strong point of your application), so great first semester grades may really help.

as for sats, i wouldnt worry too much. you likely have a 1300+, and based on similar schools, thats what matters. your ecs are solid. with good recs and a solid essay, bucknell is a strong match. that may result in an acceptance; it may not. but youre certainly in the ballgame.

so dont worry about your qualifications and do well this fall. good luck and ray bucknell!

I notice on US News Bucknell doesn't list its GPA for admitted students, but over 60% are in the top 10% and it is now listed as "Most Selective." I have a friend whose son really likes Bucknell but I don't think his chances are that great either. I recall another thread on here about chances. I'll see if I can find it and top it if I do.

weenie-

the percentage of enrolled students in the top 10% was actually 71% for the class of 2010, a record high. 82% of accepted students were in the top decile, 95% in the top quintile. colgate had very similar numbers this year for accepted students (83%, 95%) and reports an average unweighted gpa of 3.71.

what is also important to note is that these statistics include a very large number of recruited athletes. while the patriot league follows the ivy league model of enrolling true student-athletes, their standard for admission is certainly lower. the thread you bumped makes this clear.
