Chances?

I don't normally do this. Especially for someone else. But I was wondering about how likely it is for my brother to be accepted to Texas A&M. I should know since I applied there as a safety a while ago (auto admission by SAT), but I am not sure.

SAT is about 1850 or so. Not sure exactly.
GPA: 3.3

He will have taken a total of 2 AP classes, and numerous honors classes.

Class rank is probably about the cutoff of the top 25%

Extracurriculars:
Key Club
NHS for junior year
Fiddler's Group
He does some random isolated community service and educational camps and stuff.
Also he has been in orchestra since 5th grade playing violin.

He is half Hispanic, but I understand that A&M doesn't take race into account. This means that AA won't help him, right?

We live in College Station, TX, too.

So what do you think?

also in young democrats.

Anyone post in this board?

More than likely, he'll get accepted. It's not that hard to get into TAMU. If he is in the 1st Quarter of his graduating class then the minimum criteria for acceptance is only a 920 (math & verbal) on the SAT; 2nd Quarter, 1050; and 3rd and 4th, 1180.

Cool. Thanks.

Also, make sure that he applies well ahead of the application deadline and always check the credibility of the answers you receive on CC. You, or he, can call and talk with an actual Admissions Advisor who can give reliable and sound answers to your questions.

You're getting some bad advice in this thread.

Only one person in my High School outside of the 2nd decile in class rank got in TAMU, and it was because he was like top 21% with an SAT above 1300.

1300+ and top qtr is automatic
1 or the other+good EC's, essays, possibly wanting to join the corps=decent shot
Otherwise, you all better may the trip down Highway 6 and start talking to the folks down at Baylor.

Thanks for using actual stats, Vyse

Vyse,
I know that 1300+ and top quarter is automatic for in-state, but I'm not sure about OOS. Do you know that for sure?

Also, good stats plus a willingness to join the Corps of Cadets gets lots of OOS students in. Warning, the Corps is not for the faint of heart or faint of body! :-)

I thought it was 1300+ and Top 50% for Auto for In-State and 1300+ and Top 25% for OOS?

From the TAMU Admissions website:

http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshmen/getting_in.aspx

Academic Admits
Applicants qualify for automatic academic admission, if:
they are ranked in the top quarter of their graduating class, achieve a combined SAT Math and SAT Critical Reading score of at least 1300with a test score of at least 600 in each of these components; or achieve a composite ACT score of at least 30 with a test score of at least 27 in ACT Math and ACT English. Students must take the writing component of the SAT and/or ACT in order for the test score to be considered, have successfully taken all recommended course work,

Yeah, dont join the corps for any other reason than actually wanting to be in the corps. Its one of the most grueling physical and mental experiences imaginable.

If your stats are decent, go apply and apply here, but dont start shopping for houses in college station unless you're top qtr/1300, or pretty close
